Are We Humans Like Computers?

Computers are one of the greatest inventions of us human beings. Period. Anyone who is alive today, has either witnessed the world-changing revolution led by computers firsthand or were born into the new world.

As such, I don’t need to mention the sheer magnitude of change that computers have brought about in the world in just about every single aspect of human endeavour. It’s truly amazing what has happened in the past few decades.

Sometimes I feel like we are computers ourselves in some way or the other. I mean, if you study how computers and we function, you will find some form of similarities.

At our cores, aren’t we data processing beings ourselves? Let me make it clearer by elaborating further and drawing out comparisons between us and computers.

A Living Computer?

If you look at a computer, it basically consists of two parts. The hardware part and the software part. The hardware part we can all see, touch and feel and includes things like keyboards, mouse, monitor, charging cables on the outside, and microprocessors, RAMs, hard drives, motherboard and the likes, on the inside.

The software part includes the operating system and the different softwares that we have installed on our computers. Together, the hardware and software make the computer possible and the millions of things by extension.

Now, let us take a look at our own bodies. We have the hardware part, like the bones, muscles, all our sensory organs, brains, and some hundred other things. Then there is the software part, which I think might be our consciousness or the soul. I don’t know what it is but there has to be something, I believe.

Together the hardware and software of us, make us alive. And just like how non-living things like plastic, glass, silicon, and other elements make a laptop ‘happen’, similarly, non-living things like carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and other elements makes a human come alive.

Are We Designed?

Now, this raises some really interesting questions in my mind. We designed computers. But a computer needs to be told what to do. Without that, it will just sit there, doing nothing.

In the future however, we might design much more advanced computers and systems like AI, that could be autonomous and take decisions on their own. When the robotics industry catches up, we might have human looking robots walking around completely autonomous.

So, could it be possible that we were designed ourselves too? Are we just some advanced computers/robots designed by even higher intelligent beings walking around the planet without realising that?

If so, who could they be? Some people tend to believe that life on Earth could be an alien experiment. Is there any chance that such a thing could be possible? Who knows, right? In any case, it can be really interesting to think about all this, even as a thought experiment.

Sort:

It's something to think about how a group of non-living things, when combined together, can give birth to life.

Like the laptop example you gave, our collection of cells ultimately give us consciousness. But they themselves, are not 'alive', yet, somehow when a million of them come together, they form life.

That's one of life's mysteries, ain't it?

It most definitely is!

@sauravrungta I think humans are more ahead than Computers . Humans will surely do many great innovations in future

They are, but at some point, we might make a computer that far exceeds us. Experts call that event 'singularity'.

To the question in your title, my Magic 8-Ball says:

My sources say no

Human have all power doing anything else

It may not seem like it (especially before I've had my morning coffee), but the computational power of the human brain far exceeds that of the most super supercomputer.

I think that we are more than meat-based machines. I like to believe that our bodies support our minds, and our minds support our souls, which are released to the cosmos when our bodies die.

Oh yeah, it does. And one day we will be advanced enough to design computers far more intelligent than us.

I was going to write that "Computer need to learn emotions, but humans don't"

But then I realized . . .

Humans have to learn emotions just like computers.

Just for us it is natural learning.

Yeah! We learn everything from childhood!!

Thanks for this :)

That was a great read. Thought provoking, like all good writing should be. Computers have certainly changed our lives and made so many things easier, they've made the world smaller. There are many positives, but there are of course negatives too.

They have made it possible to be a complete recluse and still survive via online shopping etc.. They have contributed to people losing social skills, how many people did you see today with their heads buried in their phones??

You pulled some great similarities together on us and computers being similiar and I agree with those, but AI scares me to be honest and I work in the field of computers.. I think if we are not careful, we will make ourselves redundant.. This is already the case in some industries, like super markets for instance. It is coming to my industry now with Software Defined Networking(SDN).. and will come to many other industries too..

Aside from that, allowing the machines to learn has far graver consequences as well... I believe we would do well to not make them too smart..

Thanks for this very thoughtful comment. You have good insights about computers and the future of what this could be.

I agree that AI could potentially be a serious development if they become smarter than us. Things like these make me think if we were once created by some higher beings too, and in time, maybe we became smarter than them? Who knows!!

this opens a window to a whole lot of questions that I believe cannot be answered in a life time.
many ancient myths believe that we are created by higher beings. so this might be a possible explanation to your question.

yeah, many ancient tribes used to believe we were created by some other beings. Maybe it was god, maybe it was aliens. We might never find out.

Having an autistic grand child....and with the rise in diagnosed cases on the spectrum...I wonder if its a genetic reaction to humans forced to be in front of screens from an early age and having to process a lot more information than previous generations....computers of some sort have been around since at least the 1970"s....

We sure have to process a lot more information than the previous generations and that might be the cause of many diseases. But more research is needed on this to be sure.
