Do you know Geocaching?

in #life6 years ago

Hi steemians,

did you ever go geocaching?
Never heard of it, yet?

Well, I can tell you that geocaching is lots of fun. For grown-ups and kids. If you have a dog, take him with you!
All will enjoy this.

So, what is geocaching?

First of all: geocaching is free of charges. You can buy a premium membership but there is no need to do so.
Geocaching is about finding hidden caches in the area you are. This might be at home, but you can also go geocaching on your holidays. Geocaches are all over the world. Even in the Antartica.
Caches are hidden everywhere?!? Yes, all over the world.
They also differ in size. From photo-film roll can to an ammunition box.
There are caches with just coordinates to go there and find them (traditional caches) but also caches where you walk some miles and have to solve riddles to get the coordinates for the next riddle or the cache.
There are also caches for events and many other things.

Here an overview of Europe:

How can I find them and why should I?

All you need is a smartphone or any other GPS device. All you need to do is create an account.
I installed c:geo on my android phone, which is a third-party app. You can also use Geocaching® which is form Groundspeak Inc. who are the makers of geocaching.com but I recently had problems with this one.

The question why is answered really easy.
Because it's fun! For the whole family and also the pets.

So go to geocaching.com, create your account and let me know about your caches.

P.S.: you can created new caches also! Let people dig your front yard while you're watching 😎.

P.P.S.: I am not connected to geocaching.com in any way other than having an account and enjoying the fun.

Steem on!

Is there anything similar where you don't have to create an account? Have you tried the Periscope app?

Hi, actually you don't need to create an account.
But then you can't log the caches you found online and comment on them.
You also can't see if you searched the cache already.
Also, you can't follow your trackables if you ever want to drop one.
So you can do it without registration, but less fun I think.

It tells me I have to create an account to begin.

The google play-store for the android app indeed needs a login and a smartphone related to that login.

hmmmm.. this is interesting. are you allowed to take the "things" with you or do you leave it as-is (how you found it)?

It depends on the sort of cache. If there are things hidden (and not only a logbook), you can exchange things. But do not expect to find big treasure :)

I never really tried it actively but since I'm in the woods a lot I stumble over hidden caches from time to time. It's always a surprise and I really enjoy reading trough the papers and looking at the drawings many geocatcher write or draw into them.

Really need to give it a try one time. Sounds like fun.

It really is, @elleok!
I made this post because I remembered that I did not go geocaching for a while and forgot a little bit about it.
Now, that I remember I will start again :)

Thank you i install this app now. and next week end i will make a blog ;)

Have fun :)

I never played pokemon go, to be honest.
But what I understood from pokemon go, you can find virtual things.
With geocaching you will find real things. You can, actually, you have to touch them, to log your find.
With a pencil in your pocket, you write down the date and time you found it and log it digitally on the internet.
So, somehow it's like pokemon go - but you find something you can touch for real.
There are even caches to exchange books or other things.

Wow!! Then it will be quite interesting. Thank you sir @pundito i will start playing today itself😛

To the question in your title, my Magic 8-Ball says:

As I see it, yes

Hi! I'm a bot, and this answer was posted automatically. Check this post out for more information.

@pundito has set 0.500 SBD bounty on this post! logo_for-light-bg_1000.png
What is a bounty exactly?

A bounty is money sent to a post to be distributed to the users commenting on it. It provides a way to reward users directly and works in addition to the steem/sbd they receive from the blockchain. It works independently of SteemPower.

You create a bounty by sending any amount of sbd/steem to @steem-bounty together with a post-url in the memo.

How can I earn a bounty Users are then competing for the bounty by writing their answers to the post in comments that will achieve upvotes from the community and especially the bounty creator. The money of the bounty gets distributed to all top level comments of the post at the same time when the post is paid out (7 Days after it was written). How much everyone gets depends on the votes the comments received. The sender of the bounties votes are weighted higher so that she decideds where 80% of the bounty money goes and all other votes determine the rest.

@steem-bounty does all of this for you automatically. You can use this service to automatically pay out a challenge, ask a hard question or simply to reward the people that interact with you.

Read more about how it works, even in different languages here.

Congratulations to the following winner(s) of the bounty!
