How to Make the World a Better Place

How do we make the world a better place?

A lot of people have the urge in some way or another. We witness suffering in ourselves and others, and we desire to change things - We want better things to happen for more people.

It's a beautiful quality that humans have, and within this yearning is the seeds of some amazing outcomes. Unfortunately it rarely works out how we want it to.

This quest often gets subverted into a fault finding exercise. I know that I certainly go down this road more often than I would like to admit. We say "these things don't work", and this is why. These things are wrong, and these people are wrong too. We state or imply that life is not OK as it currently is, it needs to be different.

It's an interesting set up - the thing that makes us change is not being OK with things. Our quest to make the world a better place is an expression of our dissatisfaction, and we act on the world through our dissatisfaction.

I'm not saying it's wrong, it's a valid motivation. I'm just saying that this is why we do what we do, suffering is a powerful motivator. If things are uncomfortable or even unbearable, then there is a strong motivation for change.

Is this the only way though?

Let's explore more deeply

Where exactly does the attitude of dissatisfaction get us?

When we act out of our dissatisfaction, then we become a dissatisfied person telling other people how they should be. It doesn't tend to go down well, especially when those people are also dissatisfied and have a different opinion on the matter. We might actually have a real perception on how things are failing - yet telling everyone that it is bad and wrong doesn't seem to do much.

Think about a street preacher or a protester with a megaphone and a sign - they are passionate about their cause. What motivates them? Are they happy? What kind of response do they get? Does it create a real change?

Has protest ever made any real change? Or is it simply allowed to happen, and then reabsorbed into the homogeneous social goo which covers everything over?

Our suffering might actually identify legitimate issues, and real problems on the societal level. Yet if we let the circumstance turn us into an angry or bitter person, who acts out of these emotions - it will never create a real or permanent solution. If we act out of dissatisfaction, then we take that energy and throw it into the world. Can you guess what kind of energy other people receive from us when we are in this state?

This disturbed state also comes back to us karmically, with more situations arising to help us perpetuate our dissatisfaction. Life knows who we are internally, and does its best to provide us with a life consistent with who we are.

If being dissatisfied doesn't work, then how do we make positive changes?

We can use the same mechanics that spreads dissatisfaction to also spread enjoyment and 'satisfaction'. This is the conclusion that people using the law of attraction have come to. The same is true of all sincere spiritual seekers. They all come to the realization that changing outer things is a very limited way of operating. Yet when we change the inner world, we can change outer things in a most inexplicable way.

Being in the right state makes all of the difference. If you feel joyful and exuberant then situations and people in your life will definitely respond to that. People will enjoy being around you, and opportunities will come your way.

But how can we be joyful right now, when everything is conspiring to make us unhappy? Certainly the mind will give you an endless list of things which prevent your fundamental enjoyment of life from occurring. It's a to do list of dissatisfaction, with each thing reinforcing our belief in our unhappiness.

  • If I can just have this one thing then I will be happy

  • If I can find the right relationship, or the right partner then I will be happy

  • If I can get the right job, or have enough money then I will be happy

  • If other people treat me with the respect I deserve, then I will be happy

It all loops back into our basic dissatisfaction about life, a projection of our internal state which we beam into life. Then we say "look at what's happening, I just can't be happy", all the while not realizing that we can change what we are projecting onto life.

Making a real change

We don't have to give up on the world becoming a better place, I still think that this is a noble goal. We do have to realize that our ability to make that a reality is severely limited from a space of continual dissatisfaction.

The skillful player of the game will invest a lot of time into the internal world. Becoming grateful for things, enjoying small occurrences, and allowing themselves to come to a natural state of pleasantness. In truth the state of happiness is our natural state, it just gradually gets covered up through a lifetime of worry and overthinking. Because everyone around us is doing the same thing then we don't question it too much. Until we do question it, and then it might seem even worse for a while.

From the state of enjoyment, human beings have a natural ability to spontaneously create solutions - especially with other human beings who are in a similar state. We have an amazing capacity to affect each other because we all share an underlying connection. People are deeply sensitive to each other, and when we start to recognize this then we can see why being in a state of enjoyment actually gets a lot done in terms of making the world a better place.

Let's turn this world into a paradise

It starts with you finding your own enjoyment of life, it starts with things becoming resolved inside you. This model of changing everything externally in order to feel good inside, we know it doesn't work. The thing we are yet to explore on a wide scale though, is what happens when a large number of people change their internal state to one of deep enjoyment and satisfaction.

I'm curious to find out what will happen, and I want to assist people who wish to embody that inner state.

The possibilities are exciting, and in that excitement lies the potential for great change. Far greater change than could ever be achieved through acting out our dissatisfaction.

Peace
Unity
Balance
Harmony
Joyfulness
Effortlessness
