Today is my day off, taking advantage of this day and assuming it is not just any Sunday, I wanted to bring you some facts I could gather about the history and curiosities of Mother's Day.

Mother's Day is a holiday celebrated at different times of the year in different countries. It was originally created as a Mother's Day for Peace, which then became a day for every family to honor their mother. It has finally been accepted as a holiday in many parts of the world.

The celebrations for Mother's Day began in ancient Greece, in the festivities in honour of Rhea, the mother of Jupiter, Neptune and Pluto.

The origins of Mother's Day today go back to the 17th century in England. At that time, due to poverty, one way of working was to be employed in large houses or palaces, where food and shelter were also provided.

On a Sunday of the year, called Mother's Sunday, servants and employees were given the day off to visit their mothers, and were allowed to bake a cake (known as a "mother's cake") to take as a gift.

This celebration took place collectively, in forests and meadows.

Although some English settlers in America preserved the tradition of British Mother's Sunday, in the United States the first public celebration of Mother's Day was held in the fall of 1872 in Boston, at the initiative of the writer Julia Ward Howe (creator of the "Hymn to the Republic"). She organized a large peaceful demonstration and a religious celebration, inviting all the female mothers who were victims of the war to give up their children for the militia.

After several Bostonian parties organized by Ward Howe, that pacifist Mother's Day fell into oblivion. It was not until the spring of 1907, in Grafton, Western Virginia, that Mother's Day was re-established with new force in the United States, when housewife Ana Jarvis began a nationwide campaign to establish a day dedicated entirely to American mothers.
