Should we all become Vegetarians?

in #life6 years ago

Today I want to talk to you about vegetarianism but mainly I want you to pay attention to my broader message of:

Doing Someting is better than doing nothing.

Something is Better Than Nothing

I'm not a vegetarian. I do however feel that eating meat and fish are harmful to our planet and our existence. We can talk about this for hours but the numbers do not lie. It takes 4000 liters of water to produce 1kg of meat and this is just insane. Our fields are being used to feed animals that are then in turn eaten, yet if we would simply eat the vegetables we can grow on those fields ourselves we could feed many more people with less space and less harm to the environment.

You may think that becoming a vegetarian is something you can never do, and I have to be honest, I like to eat meat and fish as well. However nobody ever said you have to stop eating meat altogether. The opposite however, of eating as much meat as you can seems stupid to me as well. Therefore when it comes to eating meat and fish, try and see if you can cut back one day a week to start with, and see how that makes you feel. Most people that don't eat meat on an entire day report that they feel less bloated and more energised.

Also notice the amount of meat you eat. If you start your day with bacon and eggs, have a meatball sub for lunch and finish with a rib-eye you effectively eat meat 21 times a week. Whereas I eat meat once every 2-3 weeks. This is a difference of around 50x. That in turn means that when it comes to eating meat you are potentially 50 times more harmful to the environment than I am. This is not a competition, it is just something I want you to think about.

Black and White

People tend to see things as black and white. You are either a vegetarian, or not. You are either religious, or not. You are either Republican or Democrat. There are grey areas to be explored. So therefore I invite you to, not only when it comes to eating meat, yet also in other areas of your life, explore the grey areas. See if you can make a small change that has big effects. Like for instance, skipping a meat meal every week. Using less straws. Bring your own bag to the supermarket. Take a bike instead of the car. Have a run instead of playing the playstation. Help someone in need instead of going to the casino. It's the little things that help. You don't have to become mother Theresa, you don't have to become a vegan. However taking little steps towards those extremes can make a massive impact if we all step together.
