This is one of the most common plants around the globe. Its name tells us where it is most often found: along the roads and paths, on the sand, on the wasteland, in the meadows. It cannot be confused with other plants. This plant is familiar to all of us from early childhood. This grass-Plantain (lat. Plantágo)

This roadside grass. People carry her seeds on shoes and clothes from place to place. In the same way this herb was brought to America. The Indians gave her the nickname "white man trail."

Plantain is a perennial herb. Its leaves are oval with a length from 5 to 20 cm and a width of from 4 to 9 cm, but occasionally larger specimens. Each leaf has pronounced veins. The plant reaches no more than 40 cm in height. In this case, it produces one or more arrows. Their length reaches 30 centimeters. There are inflorescences at the ends of these arrows. On them, and there is aging seeds, which are also carried by the wind. Each such inflorescence can produce up to 20,000 seeds. It is known that psyllium seeds retain their germination up to 60 years. In total, more than 200 species of plantain are known in the world.

Pharmacists, traditional healers and cosmetologists have long found ways to use all the natural power of this plant for our benefit. For the treatment of various diseases using leaves, seeds and roots of the plant. All parts of the plantain are rich in medicinal substances, but the leaves are used most often.

Medicinal properties of the plant are very high. It is known that if you get a cut or wound but you do not have a medical kit, the leaves of this plant (they must be pre-kneaded or crushed, so they let the juice) is applied to the wound for disinfection and early healing. Plantain have hemostatic, anti-inflammatory and wound healing effects. So, being in nature, just remember that under your feet there is a plant that can come to your aid in difficult times.

The leaves of some species of plantain are edible and can be used to prepare green vitamin salads. They can also be used for stewing in vegetable and meat dishes. Psyllium seeds can be ground into flour and used for baking.

Plantain leaves contain a compound aukubin, which has antimicrobial properties. Allantoin stimulates cell growth and tissue regeneration. Apply it as an antidote to poisoning, in the treatment of certain diseases of the eyes, heart. Decoction of plantain roots is used in the treatment of a wide range of diseases, including diarrhea, dysentery, gastritis, ulcers, bronchitis ,asthma.

Very interesting post. I like your wild flora posts. This plant is very common in the US. I was not familiar with the "trail of the white man" name. Did you sample its leaves in a salad?

No, I didn't try to eat it. I put it on the cuts and abrasions. This is a stunning effect. Healing is very fast.
