Mom’s surgery process – from eve, actual day to post operation

in #life6 years ago

Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.
Psalms 34:8

Honestly the whole process was nothing short of a miracle, and I can only give thanks that all went well despite of the lack of sleep the night before.

The eve of surgery

There was only 1 common ward for eye, and from our last experience, common wards have both corner area and compact area. The corner was with 1 bed each facing each opposite with each other but there are enough space for family members to lay overnight with the patient; while the compact area has 3 beds side by side with another row of 3 beds facing opposite it; resulting 6 patients in one corner.

Favour of the LORD

We were super blessed with the 2 bed corner where my dad could stay with my mom during the day while I cleaned up the house at home at night and take over the night shift.

Though the hospital no longer facilitate an extra portable bed since the patients’ family members have been vandalising the old metal beds, I was still able to have a bit of a shut eye with 2 chairs and eventually rested my head at the edge of my mom’s hospital bed just to rest my head.

The slight discomfort with almost every hour waking up due to the nurses coming over to check my mom’s hypertension readings and the really cold of the night (since it was raining the whole night) did not damper my spirit to look forward for my mom’s surgery process to get through; and during the hours when she suddenly had a strike of fever (most likely due to hypertension) I hold on to prayers against the fever in the Name of Jesus by faith.

The morning came and it was time for my mom to be wheeled into the surgery room. My dad came as early as he could after waiting for the heavy rain to pass and was on time to see her prepped up for the big day.

The Surgery

Cataract surgery is actually a fast simple process and it could take maximum only 1 hour to finish; but with my mom’s condition Kerataconus it took the surgeon 4 hours to complete her procedure.

Patiently we waited at the outside of the operator room at the hallway and were blessed by fresh air and sun, looking at multiple patients wheeled in and out as they passed.

I got my dad newspaper as I was LIT-ing and fixing my mom's cell phone as her phone was infested with virus and it has been sending SMS instructions to charge my mom's mobile bill MYR9 a day.

As we continued waiting on my dad and I chatted from financial matters, family to even a tad bit of politics (which I try not to dabble too much) while we patiently waited, as the patients and family members came in and out of surgery and wondered what sort of surgery my mom was having that got us waiting for hours outside.

And finally, my mom was wheeled out.

Groggy from General Anaesthetic she had too rest for at least 4 hours; and the nurses told me that my mom has to continue to fast for that 4 hours as she is currently too weak to even sit up.

Half of the time my mom sleeps with an occasional grunt but because the operation took hours her body was ice-cold and on drips my dad has reminded me to cover her shoulder with a sweater to keep her warm.

The weather has finally warmed up a little so I have decided to head out to help my dad to settle his illegal parking compound at the local municipal.

The General Hospital has always lacked of parking and the cars decided to park at the road side and chance themselves. Often times they get compounded but the local municipal understood the lack of parking and moreover half of the vacant land is now under construction of a new hospital building they decided to slash it to 3 USD per compound.

Since I am already out on my way home to freshen up I have decided to get some yogurt drink so that my mom can have some fruit blend while she’s home, seeing that she could most likely stay over another night since she was only wheeled out at 1:30pm.

But praised be to God Almighty! She woke up at 3pm with **no side effects** and the assistant doctor after ran through a simple eye test she was cleared to go home! While I was shopping for grocery I got my dad’s phone call that I should drive around and settle the bill in order my mom to be discharged.

Time to pay

If you have read my very first prayer request you will have realised that I have been accumulating 1,000 SBD for her surgery; and also when you have read my recent update of her condition although I did not managed to accumulate 1000 SBD worth of fiat currency to be comfortably for my mom’s surgery fee, to my shocked and surprised, I got this massive discount from the General Hospital of about 1,000 USD!

My mom’s surgeon mentioned that she could try to apply for welfare support for my mom’s condition seeing our family’s financial condition since 2 years back when she first attended my mom, with no promises, but we never knew it was approved until they passed me the bill with a smile.

I was utterly speechless and almost in teared out but I hold my posture and thanked with a smile and paid up the rest of it.

This was truly a blessing, and I have mentioned before:

He does have a way.

We just got to trust Him to do it His way .

So today is day 3 post opt, and my mom is already in great progress of recovery.

She could actually even see my wrinkles when I smiled and my dad’s hardly-there brows!

That has shown that the operation was a major success and we will definitely be getting some chocolates for the surgeon (who so happens to be one of the best cataract surgeon in General Hospitals in Malaysia) when we see her on Independence Day (4 July).

Right now it is very strict diet and plenty of rest for her. And while she’s able to be a little independent today with her eye drops, I have decided to make a super quick update for all of you.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight
Proverbs 3:5–6

In closing I would just like to share and encourage you that whoever is going through some really tough time and have no idea which way you are heading next, especially family situations in financial challenges, just look UP and take heart, He is REALLY there, and He is not armed with a lightning bolt ready to smack you but He is there for you all the way if you let Him guide you.

Thank you again for the international prayer team from #christian-trail , #steemitmamas and the love and patience from #teammalaysia for seeing my journey through. Once my mom is cleared of a clean bill of health I will be able to return to the Steemit community (and resume work as well)!

Until then

Thanked God the surgery went well for your mom @littlenewthings. Rest well and speedy recovery auntie.

Glory to God's protection and provision. That's the only way I can say it @viverridae

Lots of love and well wishes to you and your family and congratulations on that massive manifestation. May many more financial, and physical blessings rain upon you.

I'm so glad that your mom's surgery was successful, and I hope the condition of her eyes continues to improve. My mother had this surgery on both eyes two years ago (two operations) and it's changed her life for the better. Before the op she couldn't tell the difference between green and blue. Each time she got her bandages off she was so excited at the improved clarity of her vision.
I live in the UK, so we didn't have to pay for the op, as we have free healthcare. The cost is shockingly high, and I'm glad you got this big discount. I think people in the UK sometimes take our free healthcare for granted and complain about the NHS, when we are so lucky to have it.
Your mum is very lucky to have you looking after her, not just in a financial sense, but to be with her at times like these. I try to do the same for my mum too. She was always there for me when I was ill as a child!

I am really happy that you guys benefited the free health care easily in the UK. We too have that for Malaysia, unfortunately it is usually for under privileged citizens since our income tax is not high.

May of us can opt for semi-government specialist check ups which is a lot cheaper than privatized hospitals, and my brother has benefited from it when he moved from government hospitalization to semi-government university hospital.

The only criteria is that those who are admitted there are exposed to students studying them; which my brother did, and he got massive discounts of large supply of Albumin (protein) to fight his Nephrotic syndrome where his bill came out to about 2,000 USD instead of at least x4 times more for privatised hospitals.

I am happy you have that heart for your mom too. Seniors truly need help and often times we children who have all grown up could easily overlook that our parents need us more in their golden years!

Thank you so much for making time and your well wishing @natubat . I truly appreciate that!

Thanks @littlenewthings. It sounds like the Malaysian health system has some good policies then, though it can still be incredibly expensive.

Well, I guess it is better than paying 100% on privatised hospitals, at least the citizens are given a choice. :)

Wishing your mum have a quick and complete recovery. Get well soon.

Thanks @legendchew ! This is still crucial week and she's getting well adjusted to faithfully follow the 2-hourly drips. It is really no joke to go through visual impare for years and go through the entire opt.

Thank you so much again for stopping by!

Speedy recovery for your mum :)

Thank you @wilhb81 !
And thank you for making time and praying along this journey as well!
