When it snows, I really miss my hometown

in #life7 years ago

Today every newsfeed spammed me that snow was falling big time in Holland. I spent most of my life in Holland, now Im living in the Caribbean. There is not the slightest of chances that snow will ever fall here.

When it snows in Holland, total chaos and anarchy seems the follow always. Roads close, airtraffic is troubled, and everybody seems kranky. Dutchies are very about being on time, and snow makes it all unpredictable, so they complain about the weather. Except for the children, they have a blast, they go outside.

With all this news, I have to grin a little bit. Because I LOVE snow, like LOVE. The sounds of silence, when it falls in the light of the streetlights, the cracking under your feet when you walk through it. When I used to live in Holland, I would always walk to work when it would snow. A walk of about an hour, the most beautiful part of the day. Im not in a rush when it snows, I enjoy it. You would always see me smiling when snow is falling. And I wouldnt stress about it. Government advises to stay inside? Cool, I will stay inside.

And then I get the 'grass is greener on the other side' feeling. FOMO to the max.. and not fear of missing out, but feeling Im missing out. Because I am...

And then I look outside...And see this sunset.....
What to say

Sort:

I'd wish I had your sunsets and beach ;-)

Hehee I also wish that about 364 days a year.. only when the snow falls!

That one time, that special one day at a year ...

wow really gorgeous!!!

As a grown on the alps kid, I totally understand what you mean...

But do you still live there now? And get to enjoy those big fat dumps coming down? Or are you somewhere else at the moment?

Eheh yes I'm still here atm, and you won't believe that it snowed yesterday for the first time this year... It's magic! But I would not refuse a white sand beach too!

It is magic! Im expecting pictures and blogs from you about this white gold okay??
Where in Austria do you live?

Eheh ok! I do live in the south part of Switzerland, in the Italian part, and you?

I live in the Caribbean on a tiny island called Sint Martin, so thats far away. My next step after this would be moving to Switserland for a while to work in about a year or two, they have crazy shortage in surgical nurses (operationstechnik fachfrau), so curious about life there always :)

Really? I know Sint Martin, not personally but I've a friend from Saint Kitts who lived there for years, and after he got married he went here and he told me something about living there! This guy's @caribbeanmon! How's things going now, after the hurricane?
Anyway I know there's need on that field, but do you know in which city you are thinking about to move?

On clear days I can see St Kitts from here, its not far at all! Yeah we took a big blow from Irma in september, but stuff is starting to recovery. Long way ahead still though!

Yeah, Im not sure about any city as yet to be honest. That would be dependent on how the job interviews would go, and what kind of surgeries they do there. (Cardiac surgery/big oncology is my business). And I guess German speaking and not Italian speaking hahaha. (Also which canton would pay good compared to taxes for my expat situation) haha

Isn't that something, we can't always have our cake and eat it too. I guess. Time for a plane ticket back home for a few days or weeks? What Caribbean island are you at and why there and not Holland?

I live in Sint Martin because I like easy life and good temperatures 364 days a year hahaha!
Only when it snows like this I feel like I am totally missing out. Tickets and free days are not really in budget at this moment ;) flying off this island is always quite expensive!

Not to mention the looooong hours of travel and time zone difference. Just with a four difference I had a hard time and would sleep every other day (LOL). Yes, I can imagine all those factors but the gorgeous photos of your homeland are truly irresistible as well.

Thats the thing, when I get outta here, its not for just like 3 days, its always a major trip..
So for now, I will just stay jealous ;)

and i miss these snowy days sometimes - there is no snow in Israel

Yeah israel is also not really snowy ever right??
Once in a blue moon maybe?

only in the northern part in mountains and sometimes (not every year in Jerusalem)
once i was at my way to jerusalem when the storm started after 21:00 and i was stuck on the frozen road in my car around 16 hours - it was perfect adventure :-) here the pictures from - http://www.victorbezrukov.com/how-to-stuck-in-snow-storm-and-to-stay-alive/

Whaaaat those pictures! I can imagine this is even a more strange story haha, especially if its there all of a sudden. Let me follow you and see whats going on down there!

with my pleasure ! :-)))

I love the pictures with fresh snowfall on the trees. It always amazes me to think they will survive such arctic freezing and still come back to life next spring. We are going to go skiing in 2 weeks, will be the first time I have been in snow in about 16 years. I'm looking forward to it. :-)

Oe I envy you a lot at this moment! Being in the snow....train the legs good before skiing, it will help you a lot! And make a ridiculous amount of snowy pictures for me pleeeeeaase!

And true yeah, the snow on the leaves, almost surreel as it looks. Well trees do start to look sad after a couple days of snow on it. But thats more because of the weight hanging over it.

(And yeah traffic drama it was today as predicted!)

Hehe no need for FOMO . It looks a lot greener on your side :)

Haha it is greener! But thats why.. the snow..

I need to get me a ticket to a snowy place somewhere hahaha. Its been years!

I am in Holland, and I'm glad the snow is almost gone for now, and not looking forward to see more snow falling down.

Just watch today.. just wait and see ;))
