Welcome to the age of the Smart TV!

in #life8 years ago (edited)

You may recall a post I did a couple days back about how I didn't quite get everything I thought I was getting when I purchased a brand new Blu-Ray/DVD player, it can be found here:

Well after yesterday that story has finally come to a conclusion. But first a brief recap for those of you that missed it.

Recap:

I have a very nice HD flat screen non-smart TV that I purchased about a year go, however, we have been dealing with a very cheap and annoying DVD player that kicks the picture off and on several times while you are watching a movie on it. This has been going on for over a year now and caused many a frustrating movie night here at the Jason residence...

Fast forward to the Holidays a couple weeks ago and as I was browsing the sales sections at the local electronics store, I stumbled upon a smokin deal for a Blue-Ray/DVD player. It was selling for the low low price of: "what I could afford".

I snatched that thing up like it was the last one (I think it was actually), and immediately took it home to set it up. Upon opening the box I realized that this particular model was "not WiFi compatible" (it said this in tiny tiny print at the bottom of the box), meaning I would need to use an Ethernet cable to make this a "Smart TV". I didn't have one.

Then to make matters worse, also not included in the box was a high speed HDMI cable, even though the box specifically said it would be included. I would need one of those in order to connect the player to the TV. I didn't have one of those either.

Now, I guess I could have sent the entire box back and waited for the new one to come in the mail, but since I already got this thing for such a great deal I figured I would just go out and buy the HDMI and Ethernet cables myself. After all, I didn't pay much for the player to begin with.

Present Times:

Fast forward to yesterday and the cables were finally purchased. When you add in the cost of both of those, plus what I paid for the Blu-Ray player, plus the time and aggravation it caused, I ended up not getting much of deal for the Blu-Ray player after all. Oh well.

Right away, I connected those cables to the TV and also the internet router/modem, and I was in business. Before I knew it Netflix would be streaming all evening. :)

Now, I realize that I am a bit behind the times technology wise and I am sure many of you out there already have "Smart TVs". However, for me, this was a giant step up. Now I could watch Netflix, play games, heck maybe even use Steemit, all from the comfort of my couch. And to think, my dad used to have to get up just to change the channel on his black and white box television...

My how the times have changed... Isn't life great?! :)

Sort:

I haven't owned a TV for years, so when I go to someone's house who has one of these, I'm kinda amazed at all the stuff you can do with it. I love to pause and think about how much high technology we have around us all the time - even in third world countries I see people with smartphones. We really made it to the future!

Happy new year!

Thanks! Can you imagine what the world will look like 10 years from now?

Technology seems to be advancing exponentially!

Very good post! Thank you!

I miss the plain ol' days of the 80's and 90's. Don't get me wrong, I'm a tech addict but I had Asimov images of the future yet was somehow delivered to the Orwellian version :/

Also, I HATE when packaging says cords/accessories included and then they aren't. And I don't hate much of anything at all...

Same here... I was visible upset... and I don't get upset that easy :) I mean for one all the other models were "wifi compatible", and this one was mixed in with them. Only in tiny little letters in the bottom corner of the box did it say otherwise.

And then not including the HDMI cable?! C'mon... someone needs to get fired at Samsung packaging... ;)

haha, no need to get someone fired! Just call and politely explain how your whole house is Samsung affiliated and this experience has thrown your continued patronage of their products into question. Who knows, maybe they'll throw ya a gift card you can trade for BTC -> Steem haha :)

Now you are thinking! ;)
