Have you ever gotten less than what you paid for?

in #life8 years ago

I think just about everyone can answer "yes" to that question at one time or another. Well for me personally, I experienced it yet again just the other day...

Backstory...

Over the past 2 years I have been dealing with a maddening DVD player. Why it has taken me 2 years to replace it is beyond me. I think it was partly out of principle that I was not going to let this stupid thing "win" and cause me to go out and purchase a new one, that and partly because of the cost itself. I couldn't justify buying another DVD player when we don't even have the time to watch movies all that much in the first place...

What was making it maddening you might ask?

Well, any time we would sit down to watch a movie, at least 3-4 times during the movie the DVD player would flash an orange light and the picture would suddenly disappear from the TV screen. The DVD would continue to play as you could still hear the sound, but the picture would not show for a period of 5 seconds to sometimes as long as a minute or 2. Often we would have to pause the movie and wait for that pesky orange light to go off and for the words "normal interlace" to flash across the TV screen, then we were back in business.

As you could imagine this got very aggravating. I can't tell you how many times I was ready to throw the remote at the TV when we were watching a movie. In fact, I think my blood pressure would be slightly lower if I never had this DVD player in the first place...

But finally after 2 years I had enough!

Fast forward (pun intended) to present time...

I stumbled upon something I thought too good to be true! It was a brand new Blue-ray/DVD player rolled into one, for the low low price of: "what I can afford!"

I thought to myself, you mean I could get rid of that crappy old DVD player while at the same time upgrading to a Blu-ray player and at the same time essentially turning my dumb TV, into a "Smart TV" enabling Netflix among other things?!

I couldn't purchase it fast enough!

Well as soon as I got home and I attempted to set it up, my feelings of elation quickly faded away. It turns out there was some fine print on the box that stated that this particular model was not "wifi compatible", meaning that if my TV was to become "smart", I was going to need an Ethernet cable. No wonder this model was on sale...

Then to make matters worse. There was no HDMI cable included in the box, even though the instructions implicitly say the HDMI cable comes with this model and should be included. I guess I was unlucky and got the bad one...

All things considered, it won't cost me that much to go out and buy an Ethernet cable and also an HDMI cable, but it certainly adds a level of annoyance with the entire process.

Considering I paid such a low price to begin with, perhaps I didn't technically get "less than what I paid for". Instead, perhaps I did indeed get exactly what I paid for... ugh :)

That have been really disappointing!

It was/is! Thanks for reading! :)

I remembered At the start of Telecom i Bought my first sim card for much more over 1000% its current price ....and am like should i had waited till now to get it?

Haha.... and what was your conclusion?

it saved me More time than i should have waited so that's no problem, lol

My husband bought a "thumbdrive" when they first came out at the turn of the century. It was $800, but his work subsidized it, so it cost him $400. It had 4MB of storage on it, which he thought was pretty amazing.

Now, we can send twice that in a given email today. He thought he was very forward thinking for getting it. And he was. But the price dropped to $20 within two years. And now it's cheap, and in many cases obsolete already.

How things change!

Yep! I remember when DVD players first came out they were hundreds of dollars... I just picked one up at Goodwill that cost me $2... and it works. Not quite an apples to apples price comparison, but it works :)

I remember when CD's came out--after cassette tapes. And I was totally anti because they were $10! I would NOT conform. Boy was I an idiot. Cell phones same thing. I was really reluctant to buy one. Smart phones as well. I always had a flip phone. Literally until last year. My husband was like, "Honey, you can't go out in public like that anymore. We need to fix this, STAT."

It's a marvel I glommed onto STEEM as readily as I have, considering how slow-to-adopt-new-technology I am! But Steem speaks for itself. I took to it naturally because I like to write. If not for that, I may have missed the opportunity!
