This is how many know the Dominican Republic. Holiday-hungry people enjoy the dream beaches and the hospitality - all inclusive offer of the finest - service and comfort up to high-end luxury.

But hardly anyone can really imagine how some Dominicans - and especially Dominican sisters - live in the country and experience hell every day.

The Batey Bienvenidos in Manoguayabo

The westernmost part of Santo Domingo is a place of poverty, hardship, misery, crime and above all prostitution. A place that is simply submerged in oblivion - a community of purpose in which Dominicans and Haitians share the same destiny. In the belief in the big business and wealth with the sugar cane, the people have never left themselves here decades ago. Today this doesn't even seem like a big joke anymore...

Prostitution in particular is now the street image of Bateyes! Believing statements from "ex-Puta's", underage prostitutes live here in this sector and 99 out of 100 are infected with the HIV virus. Very bad: Mothers are already bringing their 10-year-old children to prostitution here!! A barrio where there are more cabarets than schools. The Batey Bienvenidos in Manoguayabo has only 3 schools, but in at least 5 cabarets men can buy women and unfortunately also minors for sex.

AIDS and HIV

are more widespread here than anywhere else in the Dominican Republic. But here are also other diseases that are just as widespread:

• Papillomavirus
• gonorrhoea
• vaginal cancer
• tuberculosis

And especially drugs of every kind and form. Young addicts are as sick as the older generation. There is a general lack of money for food and medicine.

It is a forgotten place, where extreme poverty drives the still far too young girls onto the streets. For a visit to the salon, for a new pair of trousers or simply for a warm meal, they offer themselves for sex. What is fatal is that the young people believe that they are the kings of the world. They would succeed everything, they all dream of money wealth and all consider themselves invulnerable. A huge mistake, which they all too often pay with their lives, because unprotected sexual intercourse and drug consumption has its consequences.

But young as well as older men are just as stupid. In order to fulfil their sexual urge, they look for younger and younger girls. They still look fresh and healthy, but as we all know, AIDS cannot be seen.
Today at least 4 of 5 underage prostitutes are pregnant in Batey and have already been infected with the HIV virus. The place is hardly known by tourists, but by pedophiles.

From 8 pm the streets in the barrio fill up with more and more prostitutes, unfortunately mostly minors. Until the early hours at 2 or 3 o'clock in the morning, they try their luck. And the mothers of these children worry where their own daughters are? Far from it! They know it exactly, because they are all too often drivers. The own daughters are animated to prostitution. These children are deprived of their innocence in two ways

Unfortunately it is not a fairy tale, nor a horror vision with which the church might stir up the fear to find new members. This is the cruel reality - and it is also a secret that everyone knows and yet everyone is silent about.
