While visitors and tourists of the Dominican Republic lie on the beach and enjoy the sun or sip cocktails at the hotel pool, the locals are always on the move. In the Caribbean there is always dancing to Bachata and Merengue rhythms. It's not for nothing that they say here:

If you don't dance, you are a bad lover.

and so they learn from childhood to swing their hips...

Sweat beads run down their bodies, collect in the cleavage as intended and leave dark or transparent spots on the light carrier tops. The humidity here is felt to be one hundred percent or more.... It is always so - always - in summer as well as in winter, during the day and also at night.

But while the vast majority of tourists simply sizzle motionless in the sun on one of the island's many dream beaches or sip their mostly colourful cocktails by the pool in a luxury resort, the locals thirst for a lot of exercise. Always - at any time of day - and everywhere. On a boat trip or on the market, on one of the chic nightlife miles and at the Malecon in Santo Domingo or quite simply in the car wash - who doesn't dance is a bad lover, that's how easy it is here.

The woman with the long rasta plaits and the very short skirt generously serves brown rum - her colleague loosens his trousers and pushes his hips backwards. Music booms from big boxes - Merengue-time.

On the catamaran towards the island of Saona

the animator has a very easy game. The Brazilian, Cuban and especially native Dominican tourists are not asked to come to the dance floor twice.

one of the many poorer quarters of the capital Santo Domingo - dirty dolls, old radios, roots, herbs, bananas and otherwise much exotic fruit. Also here the hips circle behind the market stalls...

Flirting and dancing at the car wash

Around 16 o'clock in the afternoon. In the entrance of one of the many car washes. "D'Lujo" (Spanish for luxury) is emblazoned by a huge billboard of "Presidente", the Dominican national beer. Many dusty cars stand abandoned in a row. Those who come here want to wash their car and above all want to dance, drink and, if possible, wash their car and a lot of flirting.

22 o'clock in the evening.

The Avenue Venezuela the small "Las Vegas" of the capital Santo Domingo, fills up. Chic and mostly pimped out sports cars park with their booming basses in the second row. Young girls in very short skirts, who really only cover the essentials, stagger to the entrances of the nightclubs. Fog machines, chromed furniture and colourful spotlights exude a touch of "wannabe high society".

Here the Caribbean rhythms are underlaid with techno beats. The city can also be modern. But not everyone is allowed to dance in the glow of these neon lamps. Almost 40% of the Dominican population lives in bitter poverty.

But when they dance they forget their problems...
