That Horrible Day

in #life5 years ago

The New York Times has published an article about Chernobyl, With Helping Hand From TV, Becomes an Unlikely Tourism Magnet. Looks like HBO's mini series Chernobyl has contributed to attracting visitors to the place where in April 26, 1986 something very terrible happened.

This was an event that I will never forget. I still remember May 1, 1986, when something was mentioned in TV. It wasn't much and certainly wasn't the truth. Authorities didn't want to cause panic and besides, I think they had no idea what to do, they were not prepared for anything like this.

Blocking news was a regular thing back then, keeping people in the dark was a common practice. The less you know the better, less chance to create problems, right? Sometimes I'm wondering how much radiation we were exposed to. We got a dosimeter and all the vegetables my dad brought home from the garden ended up in the trash as the dosimeter was beeping like hell.

It is shocking how could a tragedy like that happen. It could have been avoided but there were more important things than paying attention to details and being careful. It's also blameworthy what happened after, how the whole case was handled.

As an adult I was interested in finding out as much as I can about the tragedy. I know it's basically impossible to know the truth but still. I have a book about the story, have seen a movie and this series as well but I know those are not always telling the truth.

It's still not safe but some parts of the scene can be visited. Call me crazy but I'd go to visit the place and would take photos once my hands would stop shaking. I would stay in Pripyat in front of the buildings wondering how life was before the disaster and during the disaster.

Thank you!

after watching the show im absolutely fascinated with it, I was doing even more research on what it's like now and how the exposed corium still poses such a danger and they still trying to figure out what to do with it

You're right, it's a ticking time bomb, it's not safe and something needs to be done soon, otherwise history is going to repeat itself.

Thank you!

I don't have HBO and have not watched that series, but of course I have seen other reports and photos. I don't remember knowing very much about it at the time. We can hope it never happens again........ But.

The thing is, the place is not safe and scientists don't know what to do with it. It's going to cause more problems one day. It should be a lesson to those who are using radioactivity.
