My Knives #23 Carving set

in #life6 years ago

Hello dear Steemians,

I know it's been a while since I've posted a full build, but it's not that I was lazy or anything like that (I am of course lying). It's just that I haven't actually finished anything since the last "real" post.

I've been actually working on 5 builds at the same time and, naturally, this has prolonged my process quite a bit.
On the other hand, if all goes well, I should have a few new knives to show in a near future.

Oh, hope you all have a happy and prosperous year, and that you have had fun holidays!

Anyhow, this knife set was long in planning, if I'm not mistaken, Geoffrey (not his real name) contacted me before last summer, saying he would like a knife from me...

It all started with Geoffrey posting on one of the knife groups on FB asking the makers to show their work. I don't usually respond to those kinds of requests for various reasons, but this one was fro kitchen knives specifically so I said to myself - why the hell not.
I honestly can't remember what I've actually posted but I guess it was something good because Geoff got hooked.

After a bit of back and forward, his plan emerged - he was trying to buy a bunch of knives from different makers to make a kind of collection in his new home. And, after a few chats, we agreed that I would be making a carving set - a 10" knife with a matching fork.

I've drawn the sketch, he approved the design and the build started.

The final product

Sorry no nice pictures, I was a dumb-dumb and forgot to take my DSLR on the only day that was a bit sunny - so just dome phone pics.

And that's it. I really like this set, it's both functional and aesthetically pleasing (to me at least). I am a bit sorry that I didn't have a chance to take some nicer pictures, but what can you do.

Thank you for stopping by, and see you soon with some other build...

Oh so that's why you're a docsmith. You have a PhD and are a knifesmith. Cool. I like your logo too. You've got your branding down pat. Haha.

I didn't think one could design knife blades like that. It looks unique to me. :) Your customer must be very happy with those two. Pretty sure it will be a conversation starter.

Why, thank you @artgirl - coming from you the comment about design carries some weight ;)

Yep, you got the DocSmith etymology right, and thank you for the logo praise

I love your knives, @docsmith !!! And I've been waiting for your next big post and here it is !!!!! And it certainly does not disappoint * ___ * Amazing amazing amazing~

Your knifesmithing is an absolute work of art :D

But I see the unicorn dust is no more....

(lol)

Love it, @docsmith !

Thank you - much appreciated ;)

I saw one of your other knife build posts, and I am still so amazed and intrigued by the dappling effect you got the blades. This is so distinctive and I have not seen it elsewhere.

So many holes in the handle metal and then so few "rivets" showing at the end. Quite perplexing!

I think your client must agree his set was worth the wait.

Thank you @fitinfunfood
The dapple effect is a hamon - something that has become a kind of a signature of mine.

Pins to holes ratio - the extra holes in the tang serve two purposes: it is the ways to get the overall mass down, and it's adding to the strength of the bond of the scales because they are filled with epoxy

Thanks again ;)

You're welcome. The "hamon" definitely stands out and makes you unique. Interesting about the holes, weight and strength. You sure know your business :)
