MANDELA EFFECT

in #life9 years ago

Imagine you see an article that refreshes your memory about a famous cartoon series that you loved to see as a child. You did not remember his title, not much of what happened, but the characters were samurai rabbits and there was a scene in which the protagonist had to prove his worth splitting a carrot into a thousand pieces. At last someone responds to what you've asked for so long!

Now imagine that all that is a lie, which has been a false memory that has caused you the suggestion of a prankster who uploaded a small clip and a few products of fake merchandising. How can you even remember some segments of a series that does not even exist?

That is what have been wondering a while several bloggers in groups like Reddit or Forocoches following the discovery of the Mandela Effect. The origin of this phenomenon dates from 2010, and the holes in our collective memory that these people have been discovering can leave you with your mouth open.

WHAT IS THE ‘MANDELA EFFECT’?

In 2010, a paranormal enthusiast named Fiona Broome claimed she remembered the news of Nelson Mandela’s tragic death in a South African prison during the 1980s.

When she shared this thought with a group of people, many of them said they remembered this event taking place, or learnt about it in school.

In fact, Mandela survived the jail, and lived some time outside of it before passing away.

But as much as you say to those convinced that this is so, that their memory could have played a trick, many find it difficult to assume. They saw it "with their own eyes".

Examples of the phenomenon fill the networks, especially since August 2015, when the term has begun to spread. There is a controversy over an old children's series that everyone saw and that, to their surprise, was not called "The Berenstein Bears" but "The Berenstain Bears" with "A". Thousands of people are indignant at this change in their nomenclature, and no matter how much they look for in their old tapes, they can not find justification for all of them agreeing that it was written with "E".

Many people could probably recall a scene or two, and visualise the “LOONEY TOONS” logo perfectly in their head

The way to spell it correctly is Looney Tunes. And always has been. It never changed, there’s zero evidence to suggest it was spelt any other way, and yet people vehemently believe it’s written as the former.

There are hundreds of examples of things that people think are wrongly written. Especially names of brands or logos that many swear that they remember them in another way. Like the Volskwagen logo without separation between the V and the W or Philips being remembered with two L instead of one.

In the retransmission of Tiananmen Square, the man who stood before the tanks as a sign of peace. According to several spectators of the fact, the tank ended up overwhelming the Chinese man, passing over him and leaving even a pool of blood. To the surprise of these viewers, any video on YouTube shows how the tank stopped before the man for a long time before other civilians took the protester with him, intact.

“Luke, I am your father,” is frequently quoted in popular culture. Even if you haven’t watched the Star Wars series, we still know that quote.

It’s been pointed out that would have substituted “No” with “Luke” in order to keep the context in place when quoting it. If you just went around saying, “No, I am your father,” you’d potentially sound like crazy man.

Other details are more important, such as people who seem confused when they are told that the US has 50 states, believe that they have always been taught that it has 52 states. Some even change the border with Mexico, giving much more land that now belongs to the USA.

Or This more likely stems from the mistaken belief that Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia are additional states.

Other maps of the world are affected by these alternative memories. Usually countries that are not where they remember or that their extension or borders remind them very different. There are even places that do not exist now, like an alternative Disney World that was used as a testing site before the first one opened. Also the current park changes in many details regarding what people remember.

What is the explanation of this Mandela Effect?

More and more people are convinced that these details that confront memories with reality are due to some kind of leap between parallel or alternative universes. In that other universe, or in that alternative timeline, things are just as these people remember, while in our reality things were different.

Some believe that the CERN experiments are causing these alterations of reality. As if, somehow, a momentary door was opened to those other realities and those memories were squeezed. Or that directly influence those events by changing them forever.

And then there are those who believe that these phenomena are not an accident but are provoked and is part of some kind of mental control ...

The desire that our boring life be filled with magic and mystery is reaching a truly absurd level. That a simple forgetfulness or lack of general culture becomes the largest known conspiracy is a matter of concern. Obviously there are many trolls that feed this phenomenon and many who have fun adding anecdotes to the long list that already composes the Mandela Effect.

The real concern is the comments of the people giving as true the crazy theories without the slightest proof.

The most plausible explanations so far are a combination of factors that surround the same idea: our memory is wrong and does not work as well as we would like.
