Debatable Idea #3 - Massage chair on plains
On a lighter note than usual, the other day I was having a neck and back massage and for the first time in my life I tried one these chairs:
And they are amazingly comfortable...
So why don't we use them on airplanes?
I live on a different continent from where I was born so I frequently (2-3 times a year) travel back home on a 13 hour flight. And it's always very very painful!
Why do airlines not use these kind of chairs? They would be:
- more comfortable
- more secure (the most secure chair configuration would be rotated backward but this is usually not liked by passengers) as it's already in brace position
- it seems to me they use a smaller form factor as well so potentially more economical
To be clear I'm not arguing for these chairs:
Even if it would be very nice! But on normal relatively cheap massage chairs.
My guess is that any change to aviation industry standard is now a very difficult consensus problem (segwit2x reminds you of anything?), and hence it's very difficult to make any change (for instance how long it took to allow partial use of cellphones on board).
What do you think?

These are the best massage chairs of 2018 hands down!

The chair doesn't really give the option for someone to sit normally or lean back if they wanted to. For instance, sometimes people get car sick when they look down while driving. This would be a nightmare if that happened because you would be forced to continue looking down or to sit up and hold yourself up without any support for the remainder of the flight. On a plus side, if you did need to be sick, you could set the sickness bag on the platform in front of you and puke into it without holding the bag lol.
They might be comfortable but I can't see this happening.
Hi @leaky20, good point! I did not think it may be uncomfortable for some to look down when moving...
Alternatively kitting the plane like a Japanese Capsule Hotel, something like this:
hmm that would be interesting.
I love the capsule hotel idea.
I always said that if I ever go to Japan, I'm going to stay in one of them.
We should just do this for travel ;)
