Why Are We Doing This? Homesteading!

in #life6 years ago

Here is a video on some of the reasons we are "homesteading". Lots of the reasons are because of the health benefits of knowing where and what is in your food. Does it have lots of antibiotics in it? Was it shot full of something in the processing phase and before it was sold so it would look better and weigh more and what was it and what will it do to my family? Growing your own food because you know what fertilizers were used on that tomato or pepper or whatever to make it grow. Are all the things that are used in the food that is processed in the grocery store going to cause me and my family to be at risk for diabetes or cause cancer or just be unhealthy. Raise your own food and you know where it came from, I know there will always be certain things you will buy at the grocery store but if you can cut that list down I think it will make you feel better and in the long run be a healthier person.

We moved where we did because we have the room to grow as a family and the grandkids can run and play and get out the energy that all young kids have and not sit in front of the TV and play the video games. I will be able to teach them how to care for animals and how to grow what they want to eat and how to deal with the animals when it is time for them to go to freezer camp. We moved to the middle of nowhere because it was better for me and my family as I am a disabled veteran and suffer from PTSD to get away from all the things that would be a trigger for me and keep me in a sad state of mind. We could leave our children and grandchildren something they could grow and prosper with after me and the wife are no longer in this world.

It is a slow process for us be we will get there as we choose to buy raw land and build our homestead the way we wanted it. Many people will move in a double-wide or whatever they would like too, we chose to build our homes and be and do something different. We had to start someplace and we are using an office trailer that we remodeled to start with, we built a pallet cabin, we will repurpose everything as we go, we will use them and the camper and motorhome we have til we can start building and complete our permanent homes. It is never easy but it helps us learn patience and there is even fun involved most of the time. I hope everyone has a good night/day, whatever it is in your neck of the woods.

You know for me man. Being out in the country lets be chilled out. After a short but long life. Being back in the country and knowing where so of my food comes from my power water. Tho's things helps.

That is why we moved here, being able to chill out and not get worried about things. It takes alot of stress off my mind.

Those are exactly the reasons we started homesteading!! I wanted more control over the food I feed my family, more control over my time and my money. We wanted the slow and simple lifestyle for our son - climbing trees, catching crawfish...it's really how we're designing a sweet and simple life for ourselves. You're right, it's not easy, but it's GOOD work.

You never forget the good times watching the kids learn something new or running to the garden to pick and eat the cherry tomatoes. That is what happened to all of mine the first year here and planted a few things to see how it was going to go. There is alot of fun mixed into it too.

Hahaha right now Jack's favorite thing to do is try to hug the chickens...who don't want to be hugged lol! We didn't get a chance to grow much when we moved in, but we've got a HUGE garden planned for this summer. I can't wait to teach him how to pick ripe tomatoes!

We planted a little garden the first year we were here and we had some cherry tomatoes and also some peppers. The peppers (not really hot but to them they was) were red also and they thought they were tomatoes too. It was funny them eating them and saying "hot" and kept on eating them. They like hot things as their mom and uncle eat lots of hot things. So it was a normal thing for them but they learned that those were peppers and not tomatoes. Too bad I did not have a camera at the time that would have made a great video.

HAHAHAHA I would've paid to watch that!! That's one way to learn! My friend had her 3 yr old daughter out helping her dead-head their flowers only to turn around and see her daughter pinching the heads off of EVERY flower...whoops! I guess you have to be very specific with kids!

@basicstoliving Being self sufficient is wonderful. In case of emergency you can rely on your own resources. The world is so populated and polluted right now. You don't know what you are getting into.

Yes, It is and we are working on being as self sufficient as possible.

Sounds like a plan, slow and steady wins the race!

Well, We are definitely doing it this way. LOL. It is not all about winning but it is nice too.

Good for you, you're teaching your children real independence. Not only is it good for the environment, but being able to fend for yourself and not rely on others to live surely has to be the biggest lesson. All that space and surrounding Nature, sound ideal. Good luck with it and keep us posted :)

That is the idea. Teach them independence as they will be much better in life. If all parents nowadays would teach children independence it would be so much better. Love sitting outside at night and not hearing all the traffic noises and such.

Homesteading is NOT an easy life. Deciding what level you want to be a homesteader takes time to determine.

I love that you have the title... maybe I will sit one day and write my own. GREAT idea to pass along to all of our community.

You can start at any level. We were just lucky to be able to get the land we have and at this point still able to do the things I need to. Someday I will not be able to so hopefully get the building done and structures up soon.

We have plans to have our final property in the next two years. We have a few more things financially to tend to then we are off to the country and rural setting.

Where we live now is semi-rural but I want land to grow into to... not have to squeeze everything into it like I do now.

It makes a big difference being able to spread out. That is really so with the garden, It is more enjoyable to have more than enough for yourself and are able to share with friends.
