Niagara Falls Trip & Facts with a friend who had never been. Memories on the Blockchain..... with Elvis and Facts on the Skylon Tower overlooking the Falls. | E.2

in #life7 years ago (edited)

Niagara Falls is known as one of the Great Wonders of the World.

It sends 168,000 cubic metres of water over the Falls every minute at peak times, according to the Niagara Parks Commission.

I am sharing photos and facts from my Niagara Falls Trip with you in this short series. I hope it informs some people of some of what the world famous Niagara Falls is about on the Canadian side of the border. The Falls on the USA side has their own distinct geography and history.

Some Quick Facts about Niagara Falls:

(then back to my photos)

The world famous site extends to both sides of the USA/Canadian borders. In 2016, a campaign was officially launched to make it OFFICIALLY one of the Wonders of the World supported by government and Canadians.

The hashtag (#ClaimThe8th) - was launched. More reading on that and official sources of info at the end of this blog post.

Many people think it is officially one of the 7 Great Wonders of the World, but it is not according to official sources.

The seven listed as the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World are:

Great Pyramid of Giza; Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Statue of Zeus, Colossus of Rhodes; Temple of Artemis; Mausoleum at Halicarnassus; Pharos of Alexandria.

This shot behind me overlooks the USA side of the Falls. Both sides of the border at the Falls have distinctly different geography.

The famous boat cruises everyone sees in photos -- are on the water right into the Falls! Our cruise was about to leave, so you put on the plastic thin overcoats and take photos of course and enjoy the ride and the signs for about half an hour!

There is a massive street running along the top outer edge of the Falls with lots of shops, washrooms, bus stops, places to sight see the natural wonders, etc.

Up next: Shots and Info of the famous Skylon Tower which sits along and towers over -- the Falls.

SKYLON OBSERVATION TOWER GENERAL FACTS:

The Skylon Tower has indoor/outdoor observation of the Falls from 233 meters (775'), 2 great dining rooms both overlooking the Falls.

-- The Skylon Tower restaurants are named: The Summit Suite Buffet Dining Room and the Skylon Tower Revolving Dining Room.

At the base sits one of Niagara’s largest indoor amusement areas , the Skylon Fun Centre, complete with a food court and 4D Theatre.

There are 12 specialty shops on the main level to shop in before or after your Ride to the Top in the glass enclosed Yellow Bug elevators. There's lots of parking.

The Skylon Tower is an impact building that makes the Niagara Falls skyline unique.

It was built in 1964 and opened in 1965. The construction cost was $7 million back then & was financed by the The Hershey Company shareholdings.

The Skylon Tower features outside mounted 'Yellow Bug' elevators which at the time of the construction were the first of their kind. The elevators run all year round and are a fun route up to the fantastic visual observation areas at the top of the Skylon.

Bring the camera, the views from the top are fantastic!

In the shot just below from my phone, from a distance aways, you can see the yellow bug elevator on the Tower!

Shots I took with my Samsung phone, sitting outdoors on the patio at Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville -- 5 mins away from the Falls, in the Entertainment District!

The shot at dusk I took knowing we were going to be at our table for a long time, eating and talking and having our pop (soda, for the US folks LOL) - since neither of us drink alcohol.

The following shot was taken from the same spot at our table, purposefully, so I could see and document the exact same skyline and features, during 2 distinctly different times of day!

Construction on the Tower was started in May, 1964 and the Grand Opening was October 6, 1965.

There are 3 observation decks -2 dining rooms, and 1 indoor/outdoor observation deck.

The total height of the tower from the base to the top of flashing beacon is 520 feet (160m) The height of tower above Niagara River is 775 feet (236m). The weight of concrete for the tower is 48,000,000 lbs. (21,772,800 kilograms). The weight of concrete for base of the tower is 13,200,000 lbs. (5,987,520 kilograms). There are 3 elevators to take you to the top in 52 seconds.

The number of steps in each of the two stairways from the lower exhibition floor to the observation floor is 662.

The Revolving Dining Room seats 276 persons and does 1 complete revolution per hour, visibility of Observation on a clear day is 80 miles (129km)

-- looks straight up the cliff area to the commercial area which is very very very busy.

The edutainment facts to share with you about the Skylon Tower today, and the related aerial photo were found on:

If I'm not mistaken, that hydro plant at Niagara Falls was designed by Nicola Tesla. And the guy did it with no schematics - at least that's what I've read.

I honestly cannot remember, I have watched so many things on Tesla being the liberty / awesome dude he was but I am sure you are right, now you mention that.

Wow, I had no idea it was so built up around the falls, I always imagined it was in the wilderness. Beautiful pictures buddy!

I've been going there since the 1970's --- Yes, built up is an understatement LOL.

I was so sad years ago when the Happy Wanderer motel shut down, it was in a prime part of town, on a little island of property that jutted out in the middle of the road, walking distance from the Falls and the Entertainment District.

It was family owned, german style homemade food, only 4 or 5 small hotel rooms on the top level, it made me very sad, I sent everyone I knew to that place and stayed there every time!!!

I ordered chocolate milk with my meal one time as usual, they remembered me. The daughter had taken over by then.

A few mins later she returned a little sweaty, it took a few mins....

They had run out and she went all the way to the store to get me some, can you believe that???????

I have told everyone this story, how amazing is that???????????

Now THAT'S customer service! Too many of those places are fading away. Damn shame, if you ask me.

I know, I feel the same.

I think the family made out YUGE on the real estate end of it based on my experience in the business but man, I miss them, I was broken inside when I went back after years and saw them GONE.

Sad for Barry.

  • Hit me right in the feelz.

I hope they did! They deserved to after all those years.

I'll bet it did. When the sentimental ties are that strong it leaves a noticeable gap that can't be repaired. At least you helped other folks experience the place while it was here.

It's pretty awesome, there is so much to see and do.

nice post. its great

beautiful location!!

Overload with things to see and do, for sure. It is amazing in a lot of ways.

Have never been there. It's nice to have the perspective of someone from the other side of the Falls. We usually try to avoid tourist-y places, but the boat ride and the tower might make the crowds tolerable. Great shots and very useful info for anyone one headed that way.

Thanks!

Hey Eddie.

Refresh this and read my reply 2 mins ago to Clint here, you will appreciate it, if you have a second, I know for sure LOL
