DAILY DIGITAL DETOX: A Steemit Community Life Series & Reminder. E.6 - Intentionally + Regularly Unplugging + my Quick Engagement Poll to you!steemCreated with Sketch.

in #life7 years ago (edited)

I have taken this subject pretty seriously over the years. You need time offline.

Regularly & Intentionally. For lots of reasons.

THE DIGITAL DETOX SERIES OBJECTIVE SERIES CONSTANTS:

My plan with this series is to intentionally remind you, daily to get offline, give your brain, eyes, soul a break and time to reset and remind you that relationships with people can suffer if you are always on your phone and not PRESENT -- in every sense of the word.

The irony of bringing this series to you online, asking you to get offline, on an online blogging platform, is not lost on me.

There have been limited studies done on some of the effects of this digital hold on our lives and they are concerning to say the least. Social media use appears to encourage some of the following negative effects, some of which we hear about regularly now:

  • narcissism
  • screen time/white light/activity appears to be causing insomnia/broken sleep cycles (circadian rhythm)
  • detached reality making our society and kids less empathetic and in touch with reality

Results from the few studies that have been done are troubling. Social media appears to promote narcissism, smartphones could be causing insomnia, and screens seem to be making our kids less empathetic.

Earlier posts in this series covered that in more detail.

TODAY'S DIGITAL DETOX TIDBIT:

  • Be mindful of not bending your neck over your device or phone when using it. That is covered in this post and every post in this series, quickly, in the template I use here, because there are always new people finding these posts online and it is always a good reminder for everyone!

  • Try to use proper, healthy posture techniques always and be purposeful about this.

I don't embed my sources like "professional bloggers" -- 9/10 times -- people don't click the sources anyways, let alone hover the cursor to even check quickly, and this way, they can SEE the sources / url's -- that's what I prefer myself anyways, so if i get flagged, I get flagged, I am trying to appeal to the masses here.

It is more than just unplugging intentionally as I call it -- it is a return to some societal values that we have abandoned in favour of having all the access to data and online resources we have -- a shift is required. However:

Intentional Unplugging as I call it -- is a huge and necessary step.

As a reminder of what we see daily in the PHYSICAL realm of problems, here is a graphic showing the damage of the neck and spine as it relates to pounds of pressure looking downwards all the time:

(Sorry this is grainy but I enlarged this 2x, so you could see it better. This is right from the Ontario Chiropractic Association (hard to read but that is the source) -- and I wanted this unedited, it was a jpeg and resizing those means less quality)

My Community Engagement questions to you, today, if you have read this far are simple and will evolve over time:

  • Did you INTENTIONALLY "unplug" or stay offline this week? How many times? Give yourself 1 point for each day in your reply!

  • Did you unplug with a family member / friends intentionally this week and thus CONNECT to them meaningfully? If yes, give yourself a point in the reply section?

  • Have you realized this is a problem in your life, because that is the FIRST step! If so - 2 points for you!

  • Are you aware of this problem around you and your friends and family and have you addressed it with others? If so, you get a point also! Note I have always used the word "addressed" in this series, some people confuse this word with telling others what to do.... this is not the same thing. Dialogue with others is the goal. Awareness.

  • Did you put your devices in another room at dinner time and at bedtime this week intentionally? That's a point each time, champ! List it! Think on it!!

Please tally up your points, list it in a reply and please open up about how you feel about these issues in your life and the world today!! Why??

Because this is a Community Resource and I care and we are all in this together. None of us are getting out alive.

That is the end of today's post in this series. I wanted to cover some basics and keep it short.

If you are still reading -- thank you very much and have a nice day.

If you feel my posts are undervalued or you want to donate to tip me - I would appreciate it very much.

Sort:

great post, i love unplugging and bugging out to the woods or going camping, gotta have my outdoors!

We have not talked much on here for a few months, we used to back in the fall a lot more after I joined.

I cannot remember if I knew that about you or not, that is the polar opposite of being online, being out in nature has a lot of benefits.

Did we discuss our outdoors/bushcrafting love or not?

The day the car ran me over changing my life.... I was out for a hike with 50 lbs on my back training to go be out in the woods and off grid for extended stays.

Nice to hear from you man, have a nice week - TY for commenting today.

i dont think we have yet ! trust me my memory is far worse haaha!

My memory and mind was my hallmark, well one of them anyways, everything is different now after the car running me down in the intersection etc. I know you would likely understand. We should compare gear sometime lol

i need to strengthen it with some sudok0 haha

Did you INTENTIONALLY "unplug" or stay offline this week? How many times? Give yourself 1 point for each day in your reply!

(I don't pay for internet on my mobile devices and as I travel I am mostly on public wi-fi when not at home. )

Did you unplug with a family member intentionally this week and thus CONNECT to them meaningfully? If yes, give yourself a point in the reply section?
( I visit a lot of friends and family weekly to have lunch or hang out daily, 1POINT )

Have you realized this is a problem in your life, because that is the FIRST step! If so - 2 points for you!
( I realized this was a problem 8 years ago, 2POINTS )

Are you aware of this problem around you and your friends and family and have you addressed it with others? If so, you get a point also!
( I try not to tell anyone what or what not to do )

Did you put your devices in another room at dinner time and at bedtime this week intentionally? That's a point each time, champ! List it! Think on it!!
( I trade 24/7 on line )

Total=3POINTS

Frank

I love you Twitter Bot.

Did you INTENTIONALLY "unplug" or stay offline this week? How many times? Give yourself 1 point for each day in your reply!

4 times I think but given how often I'm on that is pretty bad!

Did you unplug with a family member intentionally this week and thus CONNECT to them meaningfully? If yes, give yourself a point in the reply section?

That I did do but not enough I think.

Have you realized this is a problem in your life, because that is the FIRST step! If so - 2 points for you!

Yes.

Are you aware of this problem around you and your friends and family and have you addressed it with others? If so, you get a point also!

I have but everyone else thinks I'm crazy. (No change there).

Did you put your devices in another room at dinner time and at bedtime this week intentionally? That's a point each time, champ! List it! Think on it!!

No that is something I haven't done yet!

I think that is 7 total. I feel OK about it I think.

Very nice to hear from you!!!

I know you are aware of it from our other chats and that is at least half the battle right there. So that is really healthy.

I think you are doing a good job. I know you have some deadlines for things, mine came and went, due to my circumstances, sadly.

I did LOL a bit at a couple of your comments and I am encouraged by you, and others today taking time out to comment on this issue.

For some reason, today's post on this series really has gotten some personal commentary and feedback and I like that a lot.

It is great to hear from you sir. Carry on being #CryptoFiendish and have a nice week.

Another great post tackling an unpopular subject @barrydutton!

You raise great points

These are good reminders for a lot of people.

My wife and I own a small alternative art gallery, and I "deliberately unplug" 6 days a week simply because I am there to engage with and interact with the customers who come in... so that's seven hours, every day. Aside from that, I consider walking around outside-- or on the beach-- to be a natural part of my mental health/wellness.

Although we both make a substantial part of our living online, my wife and I "connect" over morning coffee and breakfast every day, and over afternoon coffee after I/we get home from the gallery, and again over dinner, which we sometimes cook together. No technology present, except her iPad for recipes, perhaps. If our adult kids are visiting from nearby Seattle, we're far more likely to have game night (Monopoly or Cards Against Humanity or something like that) than anything involving technology.

Problem? I realized it was a problem when I was spending too much time in old style AOL chat rooms back in the 1990s... and I pretty much unplugged from excess technology then... I don't tend to tell others how to live their lives, though... so no points for that. Although I'm unlikely to hang out much with someone who's more interested in being with their phone than with me!

Don't know what that adds up to in points... but nice "review" exercise, anyway!

Great reply on this, TY very much for that.

It is great to see you and others aware of these things. I found today's (now yesterday's) post in this series here the best so far as comments go, I am really encouraged by this!

Also because weekends on here have seemed to be so slow with posts and comments and feedback I have noticed as a trend.

I am really thankful for your comments, and everyone's here, that took some time. Comments sections are always full of nuggets of good info, I have always said!

Have a good week, I am glad to see how aware you are of things.

Followed!!
