The Worlds Most Famous Pose : "Selfie"

It is the trend that is sweeping the world. It's wide spread, it's indulgent and just plain old silly. Most teenagers and adults (wishing to young once again) take pictures of themselves from all angles and post it online. This is called a "Selfie", from the word "Self" for yourself and "ie" just to be hip.

Let us talk about the facial expression. It takes a bit of technique but is not that hard to master once you get through your first few shoots.

First, most love to position the camera upwards and slanted to their faces, with their eyes gazing to the ceiling. This, they believe, makes them look cute. OK... Another facial expression is quite similar, with the addition of making fish lips, a sort of "kissing someone" face. This one makes them feel lovable. Alright then... The third most popular expression, is also the same with the addition of a sultry style of sticking their tongue out, to make them look "HOT". A look that Miley Cyrus has been capitalizing on in relentless fashion.

Now, let’s move on with gestures.

Its been around for ages, something John Lennon made famous back in the sixties when we all needed to "give it a chance". It is the undisputed, ever so prevalent sign of silliness in the self-expression world of the "selfie", introducing the "peace sign"! Yup, it takes a bit of practice but not that hard to master... cross your index and middle finger and point upwards. To give it some style and finesse they will either place it beside their cheeks or anywhere where they look a funny or cough cool.

Selfies are happening everywhere. A rough estimate from viewing a typical Facebook page shows a person will consume 15 to 30 minutes in taking pictures alone depending on how many pictures they want, and then select the good ones for their wall. Most do it 24 hours a day in every possible situation, including "when they wake up in the morning selfie", "when they brush their teeth selfie", "when they eat their breakfast selfie", "when they are inside the car/bus/cab going to school selfie", "when they are inside the classroom, library, and playground selfie". Anywhere they can grab a quick split second, is a good time for a selfie!

Now, we all know that not all young kids have access to the internet at home. Some go to an internet cafe, some will find WiFi connections, and this will not hinder them, as long as the internet is possible, there is time and good reason for a selfie.

Some may say, "is this a productive activity for kids"? As mentioned earlier, the selfie has not just infiltrated the youth of the world but adults are just as guilty of this visual foreplay.

Fun? Sure... Addictive? Absolutely... Over taking the nation and an unproductive, self indulgent time kill? Debatable...

We need to cut the mustard and accept the reality here. Technology is in entwined in our everyday lives, its part of our moral and social fabric, it's the connective tissue that binds us all together where ever, when ever... What better form of expression can we offer one another than the selfie? Embrace it... We live in a selfie world!
