The catharsis of crypto-fascist theocratic "Libertarians."
I understand why a casual observer would conclude libertarians have a real problem with all these crypto-fascist racist theocratic weirdos hanging around under the label.
Here's the thing, though... we did have that problem. For years and years these creeps have been around, dating more-or-less to the late 1980s, sullying the name of a movement that's supposed to be about freedom for all and radical liberation and human flourishing. They've never been dominant or a majority, but they've been there, peddling their poison and milking the patronage of certain prominent public figures.
What you're seeing now is the divorce. The catharsis. The ridding ourselves of these monsters, and they're kicking and screaming the whole way as they get dragged to the garbage pile and unceremoniously dumped there.
It's noisier and attracts more attention than just quietly ignoring them, sweeping their nasty little surprises under the rug and not talking about it in mixed company. That's how it was handled by many for too long (including in the L.P.), and it made it easy to pretend there wasn't a problem. But there was a problem, and the rot was eating away at the structural beams the whole time.
So now we're replacing the crumbling plaster and yanking out the rotten beams and shoring up the foundations. The neighbours might notice in the process, but I assure you it's vastly preferable to waiting until the whole structure collapses. In the end, the nicely remodelled home will make for a much better neighbourhood. It might even become the kind of place you can invite your friends over to for the occasional dinner party, without having to worry about what sort of vermin are going to come creeping out of the woodwork.
We're getting our own house in order. I'll take notice when our counterparts on the left and right do the same... because as you may have noticed, their houses are both on fire right now.
Human beings have been digesting the appointment of Stephen Bannon as Trump’s leader strategist and the surprising upward thrust in overt racism and Nazi symbology. There are human beings announcing “Heil Trump”, giving Nazi salutes, and spray-painting swastikas in alarming numbers. the us is a large, populous, diverse united states, but there's absolutely some thing of significance here past only a few ignorant teens with spraycans and emotional issues.
The overt Nazism is very demanding. It became less than reassuring when Anne Coulter sought to tweet some perspective “Rachel indicates 5 human beings at Richard Spencer meeting giving a Nazi salute. name out the country wide defend. Cf. Ferguson protests.” Then mins later: “overall # of deaths connected to American Nazi party in final region century: zero; general # of deaths linked to Al Sharpton: 9 I know of.” Coulter may have chosen to examine exaggerated notions of a Nazi danger with, say, street fatalities or shark attacks. instead she particularly cites examples that will initiate a worry of black violence. rather than reassuring us, she suggests that the overt Nazis are simply the top of an iceberg of scary racists that includes her. equally unreassuring had been Trump’s attempts to bring cherubic innocence and naïve confusion. regarding what NYT’s Maggie Haberman called “alt-right supporters” he said: “It’s now not a set I need to energize. And if they may be energized I need to look into it and discover why.” for college kids of records this could be in particular unnerving due to the fact Nazi and Fascist leaders intentionally cultivated ideological fans who ought to organise and carry out acts of violence which had been deniable and which the leaders could, if it perfect them, condemn as immoderate.
