Kevin Hart quits hosting Oscars over homophobic tweets from a decade ago.

Kevin Hart is just exactly like Fred Phelps. There is no difference.

Wait. No: Obviously there is a difference. Obviously.

This seems like an excellent test of whether forgiveness is ever possible for the left. It might not be, and this is unfortunate, because we probably need a decent, functional, not-crazy political left just as much as we need a decent, functional, not-crazy political right. Because the left has actually won so much just recently, my message to them is twofold: First, thanks for changing everyone's attitudes about LGBT people, and let's keep at it. But second... let's also learn to forgive. And to forgive like our lives depended on it.

We've been through an enormous amount of social change on this front just lately. Having undergone all that and then refusing to forgive is, if carried far enough, a recipe for massive, ideologically driven bloodshed. No, this isn't bloodshed yet. This is a rich guy missing out on an opportunity to get even richer. But it's also an opportunity that we all might have taken to be humble and magnanimous.
