Learn to Earn Contest: Letter N

My post with a ‘N’ is not something found in a dictionary but found in the heart.

Right away when @emjoe nominated me for the letter’N’, Nanny came to mine and the flower I call her flower.

The history behind Nanny’s flowers I have mentioned before but I love telling the story so here goes...

It all happened about twelve years ago when I visited my brother’s home and saw this wonderful display of pink and white flowers along the back of his house.

My grandmother, who we called Nanny, had lived in this house my brother and his wife had renovated, long after she died.

They had a lot of work to do to bring it up to date. The house had sat vacant for years. Nanny didn’t have running water or a furnace in her house. All her life she carried water from a distant well and had to keep the wood stove stoked for heat and cooking.

Along with the inside, the outside of the house needed work. Brother used heavy equipment and extended the lawn and levelled the land around the perimeter of the house.

Much to their surprise, the next spring these colourful flowers appeared. The turning of the soil must have brought the seeds to the surface.

Knowing how much I loved my grandmother and admired her flowers, My brother’s wife dug up a small plant with the root. She wrapped it in a damped paper towel and gave it to me to take home and plant in my garden.

Nanny’s flower grew, reproduced and blossomed year after year. Each spring, when I see the flowers, I think of this gentle loving woman and know her love still continues on, radiating from another spiritual plane.

Even the little red squirrel stopped with his mouthful of biscuit to admire Nanny’s flowers.
