Ligustrum lucidum, also known as the Chinese privet, glossy privet, tree privet, or wax-leaf privet, is a captivating evergreen shrub or small tree native to the southern half of China. Renowned for its dense, glossy foliage and ability to thrive in various conditions, it's a popular choice for landscaping and hedging.

Standing tall, Ligustrum lucidum can reach an impressive height of 10 meters (33 feet) with a trunk diameter exceeding 1 meter (3 ft). However, it's commonly maintained at a more manageable size through pruning. Its slow and steady growth allows it to age gracefully, with some specimens reaching centuries old. The bark adds another layer of visual interest. It starts smooth and light brown in younger trees, maturing to a rich, reddish-brown with a distinctive stringy texture that peels in long, narrow strips.

But the true star of the show with Ligustrum lucidum is its foliage. Unlike most privets with dull green leaves, this species boasts stunning glossy dark green leaves, which live up to its "glossy" moniker.

These elliptical to oval-shaped leaves measure 6–17 centimeters (2.4–6.7 inches) long and 3–8 centimeters (1.2–3.1 inches) broad. They are arranged oppositely on the branches, creating a dense and lush appearance. The upper surface of the leaves is where the magic lies. It shimmers with a beautiful glossy sheen, particularly in sunlight, making them truly eye-catching. The undersides, however, are a paler green with a matte finish.

The captivating foliage of Ligustrum lucidum isn't just aesthetically pleasing; it also contributes to the plant's resilience. The dense arrangement of leaves and their glossy coating help the tree conserve water, making it well-suited for drier climates. Additionally, the waxy coating on the upper surface further protects it from harsh weather conditions like wind and scorching sun.

Ligustrum lucidum boasts a remarkable variety of cultivars, each with its own unique charm. Some popular choices include dwarf forms ideal for smaller gardens, varieties with vibrant yellow foliage that adds a pop of color, and cultivars with even denser, more congested growth patterns. This adaptability makes it a versatile plant that can be incorporated into diverse landscapes, adding a touch of elegance and structure.
