However, it's commonly maintained at a more manageable size through pruning. Its slow and steady growth allows it to age gracefully, with some specimens reaching centuries old. The bark adds another layer of visual interest. It starts smooth and light brown in younger trees, maturing to a rich, reddish-brown with a distinctive stringy texture that peels in long, narrow strips.
