Malabar spinach, whose scientific name is basella alba, is an edible perennial of the basella family and is found in tropical Asia and Africa.

Also known as vine spinach, Ceylon spinach and Indian spinach, it is a fast-growing, soft-stemmed vine that can grow up to 10 meters long.

The stems are green and the leaves are green. On older leaves, purple pigmentation appears from the base of the leaf to the tips.

The thick, semi-succulent, heart-shaped leaves have a delicate flavor and a slimy texture, and are widely used as a leafy vegetable.
