American sweetgum with botanical name liquidambar styraciflua, is a deciduous tree of the genus liquidambar, native to warm climates in eastern North America and the tropical mountainous regions of Mexico and Central America.

Also known as American storax, hazel pine, bilsted, redgum, satin-walnut, star-leaved gum, alligatorwood, or simply sweetgum, it is a medium to large tree, growing anywhere from 15 to 45 m tall, with a trunk that points upward. Up to 60-90 thick.

The leaves are star-shaped, smooth, shiny, and deep dark green, turning bright shades of yellow, orange, red, and purple in the fall.

Sweetgum is one of the most valuable forest trees in the southeastern United States and a popular ornamental tree in warm climates.
