From Jungle to Paradise, on Sentosa Island, Singapore – Landscape Photography

in #landscapephotography6 years ago (edited)

This placid beach is on Sentosa Island, which lies just off the southern coast of Singapore. In the Malay language, “sentosa” means "peace and tranquility," and that name seems entirely appropriate. But it was not always so.

Over the past few centuries, the island had been known by various other names, all of which referred to death. Two of those names translated as “Island of the Dead” and “After-Death Island.”

From a prison in a swampy jungle …

The origin of those names (and other similar names) is unknown, but it could have something to do with the fact that, until well into the 1900s, the island was essentially a hostile environment of dense, uninhabitable, swampy jungle. That is, it was not the kind of place you'd want to live!

During World War 2, the Japanese used the island as a prisoner-of-war camp. The Australian and British captives held there most certainly did not want to be there, and probably did not find the place either peaceful or tranquil. Nor did they have a pleasant view of this beach, or even a beach to relax on.

… to a placid piece of paradise

In the 1970s, Singapore started developing the island into an attractive resort area. Among other intiatives, it established 3 man-made beaches along the southern shore, by importing sand from neighbouring countries. At the same time, the government held a contest to rename the island, and ultimately chose the name “Sentosa.”

Since the island was just a 30-minute bike ride from my home when I lived in Singapore, I would occasionally visit it on those hot and humid days when I wanted just a bit of light exercise, but a lot of peace and tranquility.

This is my entry in @juliank’s Landscape Photography contest.

pristine and stunning beach , however, the name "the island of the dead" seems scary according to the history. Looks mysterious

Definitely Pristine. I would cycle there at dawn, before most other visitors came, so it was usually very quiet. But never "morbid". ☺

taking the best shot of the photo in not a crowded place is definitely perfect. I will really see its beauty

Thanks for your comment. Glad you like the photo!

Really happy to know more other place in the world. Through your photo, I can travel around the world at my house, right? Ha ha

Yes, but the actual scene is a bit nicer than this virtual reality.

you're right. That's why a lot of people spend money in travelling

Nice to have a history lesson there @majes.tytyty Didn't know the dark past of Sentosa. Amazing how they have transformed it. :)

Yes, it is amazing. When I used to cycle around Sentosa, I never assumed that it was a dank jungle as little as 50 years ago. Again, it shows how Singapore can work with nature and improve on nature.

Remarkable and impressive.

That's a nice biking place. Previously, there were some discussions here as to why the Philippines can't rebuild like Singapore. Sadly, corruption prevailed but that's really a long story. It just goes to show how other nations look up to them :)

Indeed, one of the reasons for Singapore's success is the way it clamped down very hard on corruption, virtually ridding it entirely.

Hopefully Duterte can do similar in the Philippines.

We're hoping for a change and improvement here too :)

It looks expensive!

But the beach is free!! ☺

i had a great memory in sigapore. nice to meet you :) i am kr-newbie

I have many great memories of Singapore. And a few good memories of my brief stays in Korea (South Korea!!!), too.
