GULLFOSS

ICELAND'S ICONIC WATERFALL

This summer, I spent a few days in Iceland with my husband while en route to Scotland. Over the next few weeks and months, I plan to share some images and stories from that memorable trip.

One day we drove our rental car for about 237 kilometers (147 miles) around what is known as the Golden Circle. I aim to post some highlights from the Golden Circle drive (in no particular order) over the next few days and weeks.

Please enjoy these photographs I took of the incredibly powerful and iconic Gullfoss Waterfall (Golden Waterfall) on the Hvítá River (White River) on the Golden Circle in Iceland! Water from the second largest glacier in Iceland ( the Langjökull) flows into the river! Hence its tremendous power!

It's a waterfall with an incredible story to tell, if it could speak! Back in the early 1900s, an Englishman named Howells wanted to harness the power of the falls for electricity and tried to buy Gullfoss from the farmer, Tómas Tómasson, who owned the property at the time. However, Tómas did not agree to a sale, deciding at a later date to lease Gullfoss to Howells.

Tómas's daughter, Sigriður, was not happy about this and set about to try to void the agreement by using her own savings to hire a lawyer from Reykjavik to help her. She was so passionate about saving the falls, that during the years the trial was dragging on, she threatened to throw herself over the falls if construction went ahead! She was not successful in court, but in the meantime the contract expired because the rent was not being paid!

Sigriður is often known as Iceland's first environmentalist.

Her adopted son acquired the waterfall from Sigriður's father in 1940, later selling it to the government of Iceland. Then in 1979 Gullfoss became a nature reserve, permanently protecting it for us all to enjoy!

Iceland is an incredible country. Every photo I see makes my heart skip a beat. Yours are no exception.

Thank you, as well, for the historical bits. It's always nice to learn more about a place.

Resteemed!

Thanks, and thanks for the Resteem too!

Beautiful pics of the waterfall. Look forward to seeing more in the future.

Thanks for sharing @dmcamera

Thanks for your kind words. I’ll be posting more of Iceland, and Scotland too in the weeks to come.

Your posts are great! Did you all go to the God Falls Godafoss?

We didn’t, as that waterfall is in the North East and we didn’t have time to go that far. Perhaps next time!

We had a local driver when we were there and he would make these huge detours just to show us something of his country. I also loved the Puffin, dolphin and whale watching cruise.
One thing I really loved was when you left the city area, the restaurants we just someone’s home with a couple of extra tables. No menu! You had to eat what they served. The food was always fantastic!

Sounds like you had a longer stay that we had. Next time we'll go further afield.

We went as far as you could go, but mostly along the coast! It was truly amazing!

They had a local saying. “If you ever get lost in the forest in Iceland, Stand up”

wow for the first two shots!
thank you for the resteem!

Glad you enjoyed them! And you are welcome for the Resteem! :-)

A real life story with a good ending! Love it! Those falls are magnificent... Bet standing there, you get the spray on you... :) That's so cool...

Thanks! Yes, we were wearing raincoats, rain pants and waterproof hiking boots! The noise was incredible too. I did make a little video of it. I should post it sometime!

Ooohhhh, yes, that would be amazing! :)
