Bradgate Park Sunrise

Bradgate Park in Leicestershire, despite the name, is a rugged wilderness around 800 acres in size. The highest point of the park, around Old John Tower, is surrounded by rocky outcrops that are some of the oldest rocks known in the UK.

These rocks, and Old John Tower itself lent some handy foreground interest to the view of the rising sun over nearby Leicester.

Not far from Old John Tower is the war memorial. On this particular day the windchill was around -10 so I didn't linger too long in this part of the park!

After sunrise there was just time to capture a few golden hour shots of a small, icy lake before heading back to warm up.

You captured the mood of this snow covered scene so well with your stunning shots! Thanks for the tour of Bradgate Park. Was the tower part of a castle or fort or something?

I Upvoted your post 100% and included a link to it from my post here.

Thanks! it's actually hoar frost rather than snow believe it or not. It snowed the day after we were there. Old John Tower is a bit of a mystery - legend has it that the aristocratic landowner held parties on that hill and during one particularly drunken evening one of his workers was killed. They added the "handle" to the side of the building to make it look like a tankard of ale in memory of the worker. Take that one with a huge pinch of salt I think :-)

That's a great legend! Ah yes! I've seen plenty of hoar frost in Scotland! I had just assumed it was snow.

Thought so too myself till I started walking on it!
