World Labyrinth Day: Lessons From the Labyrinth

Yesterday — May 4th — was World Labyrinth Day.

As lifetime members of the worldwide Labyrinth Society, who also happen to have our own back yard labyrinth, we have been participants in this event for a number of years.

The tradition of World Labyrinth Day is that all around the world people walk labyrinths in unison under the greater heading of "We Walk as One at One."

Typically, thousands of people participate, in hundreds of locations.

The Labyrinth is an ancient symbol that has been traced back as much as 5,000+ years.

Unlike a maze — which has multiple "solutions" and "blind alleys" — a Labyrinth has a single path that leads from the entry point to the center, around a number of "circuits." Because the journey through a labyrinth has no "puzzle" to solve, it works well as a meditative tool.

In many ways, the labyrinth is a metaphor for our journey through life.

To accommodate a single circular path, walking a labyrinth means you encounter a number of 180-degree turns, and sometimes your walk takes you very close to the center, while at other times you will feel like you are almost back where you started.

But if you persevere and keep walking, you'll eventually make it to your "objective," the center of the labyrinth.

As a further metaphor for our lives... the center ("objective") is actually quite small, relatively speaking. And so — even though we feel a sense of accomplishment — we cannot reasonably stay at the center of the labyrinth all the time... our journey through life is an ongoing path of twists and turns... just like the pathways of a labyrinth.
