USS Indianapolis 🇺🇸
On July 10, 1945, 34 days before the end of World War II, American top military officials made a plan to take a certain parcel by ship to Pearl Harbor. It was a top secret mission and no one on board knew what they were carrying. In short, only the American President and a few other high-ranking officials knew about this operation. No one knew what was going to happen at the time, but 27 days later the whole world knew about it. The parcel carried on the ship was none other than the main part of the Little Boy bomb that destroyed Hiroshima.
The Fortland class cruiser USS Indianapolis (CA-35) was chosen for the purpose. At that time it was about 13 years old and a group of 1200 sailors worked there. Charles B Makway was assigned as the ship's captain for the mission. But none of them were aware of the operation. In short, the captain was even allowed to read the orders given by the higher officers only after the ship went into the deep sea. Due to a secret operation, the ship crashes and everyone dies, but no one knows that they went there.
On July 16, 1945, the Indianapolis sailors departed San Francisco in high spirits. The soldiers were standing near the bomb, which was placed in a special high-security place on the ship, but no one knew what it was. They delivered the parcel to the Pearl Harbor base on July 19th, then proceeded to Guam and departed for the Layte Islands in the Philippines on the 28th.
On the afternoon of July 30, hydrophoners on the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) submarine I-58, diving on the seabed and spying for the enemy, heard the sound of a plate breaking in the galley of the Indianapolis six miles away. On July 30, 1945, at At 12:04, the submarine's commander, Mochitsura Hashimoto, ordered an immediate attack on the ship.
The people on the ship, who knew nothing, sailed lightly. The first torpedo attack from the Japanese submarine pierced the ship's hull and immediately started a fire inside the ship. At this time, a ship should move in a zig zag shape, but when the second and third torpedoes came, the ship did not turn or there was no light on the ship at that time. This is a secret operation, who will come to save them? The decision was left to the captain. When the ship was completely destroyed and caught fire, the captain ordered the sailors to abandon ship immediately. Within 12 minutes of the attack, the ship completely capsized at sea.
Due to the covert operation, Indianapolis was at the EMCON level. As such, there was no proper execution of attack procedures. They broadcast several distress signals just before the ship sank, but they did not know if anyone caught it or not.
About 300 people drowned along with the ship. The rest survived by clinging to tubes and several lifeboats, but only for a short time. That area was an area where there were a lot of sharks. Also, a storm came that day in a way that no one expected.

3 days later, Lieutenant V.C., who was on patrol. A PV-1 Ventura bomber piloted by Gwin spotted a life tube floating in the sea. During further search, the group was seen floating in the sea and it was then that the headquarters learned that the ship had sunk. Immediately several planes airlifted life jackets to the sailors and then 7 destroyers led by USS Cecil J Doyle rescued them.
But only 316 people could save their lives. Out of 1200 people, 900 died due to shark attacks, dehydration, stress and sea water poisoning. The captain was among the rescued. Most of the public protest was against Captain Charles.
After the war, he was charged before the court-martial for not saving the ship in the face of attack and causing the death of 900 people. The captain and all the survivors confirmed that the ship could not be saved due to the blackout. The captain of the Japanese submarine that attacked later appeared before the case and said that they did not even have time to think in the face of their 6 torpedo attacks. But the military court did not accept it and the officers of the ship led by the captain declared the verdict.
But Captain Charles B Makway was not upset about that. Knowing that lakhs of people died because of him, he shot himself with his weapon in shock. After 55 years, President Bill Clinton exonerated him in 2000, but the real culprit was never revealed.USS Indianapolis 🇺🇸
