Demand of power cable is surging
The Australian government has issued feasibility permits to six companies for offshore wind power projects. This is a welcome development for clean energy advocates.
However, the lack of installation technology for submarine power cables is a problem. Converting wind energy into electricity requires a network of HVDC submarine cables and substations that can easily transmit electricity over long distances from turbines to shore.
Cybersecurity threats also exist. Offshore wind power farms are operated remotely and have poor security. It also requires extensive digital infrastructure to connect with land-based systems and maintenance vessels.
The United States considers offshore wind farms a national security issue. This is because there is a high dependence on key components procured from China for turbine manufacturing. But geopolitical issues are secondary. As submarine power cable production orders are full, many countries may face HVDC cable shortages.
Technical issues are also important, as large and long high-voltage cables are required. Additionally, the number of ships capable of installing and managing cables is limited and is aging.
