Is The Korean War Over Yet?

So the Korean war ended this week. Or so you would believe if you scanned the headlines of the British tabloids.

"North and South Korea have finally ended the Korean War after 65 years!" blares The Mirror.

And reading from the article:

North Korea's willingness to abolish its missile facilities and close its main nuclear complex has been hailed as the end of the Korean War.

Speaking at their summit talks in Pyongyang, South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said they agreed to turn the Korean peninsula into a "land of peace without nuclear weapons and nuclear threats."

[...]

A spokesperson said: "Leaders of the South and the North have in fact announced the end of the war on the Korean Peninsula by their agreements."

Well, will you look at that! Who woulda thunk it?

As everyone knows, the Korean War didn't really end in 1953. Instead, that's when the US (representing United Nations Command) co-signed an armistice with North Korea and China to bring about the formal ceasefire that has held ever since. So it's pretty amazing that the war officially ended this week, isn't it?

Well it would be, if it were true. Which of course it isn't. And we don't even have to go very far to figure that out. Let's just turn to the "paper of record," the Old Grey Presstitute herself, the good old New York Times:

"Declare End to Korean War, South’s Leader Urges U.S."

And reading from the article:

President Moon Jae-in of South Korea urged the United States on Thursday to declare an end to the Korean War as an incentive for North Korea to denuclearize, a call that could put the Trump administration in a bind as it tries to revive stalled talks with Kim Jong-un, the North’s leader.

[...]

One of the first steps Mr. Kim wants to take before moving toward denuclearization, Mr. Moon said, is to secure a joint statement declaring an end to the 1950-53 Korean War, which was halted only with an armistice.

Oh, I see. So The Mirror headline and report is purposefully muddying the waters with blatant misinformation. This is the dinosaur fake news mainstream establishment lapdog clickbait media in a nutshell, folks. Don't believe a word they write.

That being said, the fact that (according to President Moon), both South and North Korea are ready and willing to issue a joint statement declaring an end to the war is a significant development. Assuming it's allowed to go ahead.

Which, of course, it won't be. As the NY Times report goes on to make clear, the offer is a fake and meaningless political platitude which, even so, is not under serious consideration.

American and South Korean analysts express fear that such a declaration would give Mr. Kim reason to demand that the United States withdraw its 28,500 troops from the South while North Korea is still a nuclear-armed state. But Mr. Moon said it would be merely a “political statement,” and that it would not affect the status of American troops in South Korea or his country’s alliance with the United States.

This paragraph goes to the core of the "reality" (or, more accurately, the lack thereof) of these talks. American warhawks worry that actually ending the Korean war would remove the fig leaf of justification covering America's military presence on the peninsula. So to that, Moon says (paraphrasing): "Cool it, guys. This is just a political statement we're talking about. We don't actually want to end the war." I mean, I've heard of kabuki theater before, but this takes the cake! (Note to sticklers: I live in Japan! Don't you think I know that kabuki isn't Korean?)

This is the ground truth of the Korean war: It's not over because no one really wants the war to end. As we know, governments love to control their population with threats and nightmares, real or imagined, and the mere perception that North and South Korea are still at war (however ludicrous that might be 65 years after the last shot was fired) is valuable to all of the players in this game.

The Korean "war" permits the Americans to maintain boots on the ground in East Asia. It gives China another pretense for its own militarization of the region. It has allowed the North Koreans to completely cut its population off from the outside world. And it has written a blank cheque for the South Korean government to maintain varying degrees of martial law over its citizens (and even its own politicians).

So the idea that a peace deal is just around the corner is, frankly, preposterous. At this point, it isn't even on the table.

As Professor Michel Chossudovsky—who has been covering this issue extensively for many years—notes in his writings on these latest talks, no peace deal will be possible unless and until the agreement putting South Korean military forces under the direct control of the Pentagon "in times of war" are annulled. This agreement gives a Pentagon-appointed military general "OPCON," or "operational control" over the South Korean-US Combined Forces Command during crisis situations and has been a significant point of contention for many decades. In effect, it allows the US to take the Korean peninsula to the brink of war with near impunity because, as the old adage has it, Uncle Sam is willing to fight North Korea to the last South Korean.

As Chossudovsky stresses:

We are dealing with a diabolical military agenda formulated in Washington: The US seeks under the Combined Forces Command to mobilize the forces of South Korea against the Korean Nation. If a war were to be carried out by the US, all ROK forces under US command would be used against the Korean people. The annulment of the CDC is therefore crucial. A prerequisite to the implementation of the April 27 agreement is that the ROK government of president Moon Jae-in have full jurisdiction over its armed forces.
Obviously, then, a mere "political statement" as Moon (and presumably Kim) are suggesting won't cut it. What is needed is a formal treaty to be preceded by the scrapping of the Pentagon's OPCON over South Korea, otherwise the warmongers in Washington could undermine the peace at any time by provoking a conflict that the South Korean military would be obligated to finish. Chossudovsky again:

The legal formulation of this bilateral entente is crucial. The bilateral arrangement would in effect bypass Washington’s refusal. It would establish the basis of peace on the Korean peninsula, without foreign intervention, namely without Washington dictating its conditions. It would require as a second step (following the annulment of the Joint Forces command) the withdrawal of all US troops from the ROK.

So to answer the titular question of this article: No, the Korean War is not over yet. A real, workable, viable peace treaty isn't even on the table. And, sadly, given the repeated signs that the US is not negotiating in good faith, it seems exceedingly unlikely that we'll see such a deal any time soon.

Now, did somebody say WWII is about to end? Because I have some bad news for you . . .

i think, the korean war has not ended.this is just the beginning of talks and many more talks to come.doesn't mean that the meeting of this head of state is an outright peace of the two.

James, you realize you are citing the New York Slime here. Why would you do that? They are clearly the leader in the disinfo pack.

I think you are missing a big piece of the puzzle. Strings have been cut. Eric Schmidt and the CIA no longer rule Kim Jong Un. All things are possible now.

We acknowledge the positive steps so far though...but it is far from

I don’t think the question is so much is the KOREAN peninsula now out of the WAR scenario , but how is CHINA taking this since it really doesn’t want this ❓ M.I.C. (Military Industrial Complex) can’t be that happy about it , and all the warhawks, the communist infiltrators to our republic , etc etc etc . I just see so many obstacles still to be challenged since the real problem isn’t just North Korea , but ALL the terrorist that call themselves our representatives and politicians . That is the real threat to humanity , and how YOU never say that out right makes me scratch my head . You do make a lot of comments in complete disagreement with their policies and actions , but I never hear from your white ass chicken lips that indeed what we all need to do to remove any further threats to our existence is all these meat puppets that kill , and deceive us on a daily , if not hourly bases . So even though you speak very eloquently , and write some very nice pieces , I just have to question why not paint the picture of the obvious reasons why we’re in so much trouble . Just say it ❗️You’ll feel better , and not just play a mouth piece exploring the depths of malcontenet in the internet . ITS THE GOD DAM POLITICIANS THAT HAVE TO BE ROUNDED UP AND PUT IN CAGES❗️See how easy that was . Do I fear that they may send mercenaries to my door ❓FUCK NO . I look foward to capturing some and interogating them for I mean to kill monsters and have no fucking fear . You however always remind me of the little skinny kid on the playground that was more then willing to hand over your lunch money to the local bully just so he wouldn’t break your glasses . See I was the guy that went AFTER the bullies on the playground and shoved that lunch money right up their asses , and said “tell your mom I said HI”. In this war that we’re all going to be involved in FOR SURE . There will be NO ROOM for playing safe . Its going to be LEAD , FALLOW , OR GET THE FUCK OUT OF THE WAY‼️No more word plays , or games❗️The entire human population must UNITE and arrest ALL these PARASITES , take their nuclear buttons away , and deeply interrogate them until every mercenary , and paid for terrorist has been apprehended and interrogated for possible collusion with government officials . We need to bear arms , scare the shit out of them . Like Admiral BULL HALSEY said “HIT HARD , HIT FAST , AND HIT OFTEN❗️” Me and people like me have no intentions of talking our way through the war . Enough BLAH BLAH BLAH . And just like your GLOBAL WARMING argument = Your wrong❗️You ignore that ALL the planets have lost their ice caps . You say NASA is full of it , but dismiss that they’re hiding other information ⁉️ LIKE THE SUN DYING . Your just not realistic . SHIT needs to be done , not just talked about .
