Job Search vs Company/Industry Research?

in #jobs7 years ago

Search for Jobs or Search Companies within a given Industry?

The biggest mistake a Job Seeker makes is running into a Job Board to see if he could find a Job that correlates with his/her profile. BIG Mistake.

They just don´t think or look the problem from the right angle/perspective.

Let´s see how to effective attack the problem:

  • First, decide in what type of industry you want to work: be Government, Financial, Banking, Consumer, Mining, Technology, etc... Here I will give you the whole list of LinkedIn Industries https://developer.linkedin.com/docs/reference/industry-codes# so as to you make up your mind

  • Second, proceed to make a list of the first 100 competitors in that space. The more competition the better opportunities you will have. Keep away from monopolies and oligopolies

  • Third, decide for the first 12 companies and proceed to research them with respect to products, markets and principal competitors. By all means attempt to find their LinkedIn Company Page in order to find out how many employees of that company have LinkedIn profiles. Filter them by Location, and the HR & Staffing Industries and reach them out with a Powerful Mini Invite Letter.

Repeat the above, for the whole market you are interested.

If the company of your interest does not have company page, then go to the company website and search for their recruiting channels. Bear in mind that company website is different than career center or internal job board. Typically you will find those links somewhere within main page of company website. And a company website is not a LinkedIn Company Page, either. Don´t get confused.

What is the Problem?

Well, not all company recruit in the same place, and that is the first thing you need to find out: Where does a given company recruits? And that can only figure out by Networking, Calling the Company or Asking Employees in that company.

Are you telling me that I need to know where a given Company recruits, before I start searching for Jobs? YES.

And the reason is that if you only look at the Job Boards, then you are looking only a the distant past: 2 months to be precise. YES, 2 months old data and basically for the very difficult jobs to fill or poor paid ones. The ones no one want to take. L.O.L

How is so?

When a Job is born, either because of creation or getting vacant, the company publish in its internal Job Board. If it fails, then they will go into its own data base, and if that fails, they will go into Referral Mode. If everything fails, then they will job to publish in a Job Portal and by that time 2 months have elapsed. That is the reason Referrals command 35% probability compared with 5% of Job Boards. If the Job Board fails, then the company will go into hiring Headhunters.

The only thing will work fast for you is to have a Powerful Network. Being connected with Company Recruiters, pays off.
