How Do You Use Awesome In Every Day English Conversation?

Awesome is everywhere. Native speakers use it a lot. It's all over the Internet. It's in website names and app titles. It's in movies and on TV. And it's here on Cool English.

When I was a kid in the 80s, awesome was a new slang word that meant something really cool or good. Nowadays it's not really slang anymore, because everyone uses it.
_{８０年代私の子供のごろ、awesomeは新しいスラングの言葉でとてもいいことやかっこいいことという意味でした。現在はだれでも使っているから、もうスラングとは言えないかも知れません。}

And the meaning has changed. Originally it just meant something amazing. Now it can mean anything from amazing to just ok. And it can also be used sarcastically, so it can have the opposite meaning. So you can use awesome in a lot of situations.

A long time ago, awesome meant something that was so powerful that it made people afraid. Like, the energy of the sun is awesome. Or, the size of the universe is awesome. People used this word a lot when talking about God and nature.

You can still use awesome with the original meaning. But most people use it with the modern meaning. So, some people might not understand you. If you want a word that has the original meaning without the new meaning, use "awe-inspiring."
