Travel Tuesdays #20: Naka-Meguro Starbucks, Tsutaya And The New Station

Travel Tuesdays

Naka-Meguro has become one of my favorite areas in Tokyo. I've actually been visiting there since my friend had a club night I would DJ at in the early 2000's, but it has changed a lot since those days. Back then it was somewhat of a backwater to Shibuya, Daikanyama & Ebisu, now it's one of the hottest spots in Tokyo.

Whenever I am in town I stop by the Starbucks & Tsutaya cafe. It is a unique bookstore in a Starbucks, or is it the other way around? The atmosphere is nice, every seat has an outlet for you to power your devices and you can enjoy a book while you wait for your phone to charge!

The Naka-Meguro station was rebuilt several years ago and they added in this Starbucks as well as a few other places, like Good Barbeque. There is a walk by Starbucks, shown above, then across from that is another Starbucks inside of Tsutaya, or is it the other way around? It's a bit confusing because there is a Starbucks and Tsutaya across from each other.

Anyway, as you can see in the pictures above it's pretty interesting and if you are into coffee and those old things called "books" it's really awesome. They sell more than just books though. My wife, @tokyowomanslife, and I spotted these Diesel housewares on the shelves!

I liked the nut shaped glasses and the crescent wrench silverware, why not?!

Tow other special things that stuck out about this Starbucks & Tsutaya. 1. There are self checkout kiosks. Scan the book or other product, insert your money and you're done! I know, we've had these in America for a long time, but this is Japan where we expected automation in the 80's!

Opposite the Starbuck's, in Tsutaya, you can also order beer. Now we're talking! Enjoy a pale ale while your phone charges or while you enjoy a book.

There is actually a lot to do right here at the station so if you are ever in Shibuya or Ebisu I urge you to stop by Naka-Meguro for a look at trendy Tokyo!

Makes me wonder how Kyoto would be different if I visited today. Interesting to watch an area evolve like that. And self checkouts? Man, finally, right? lol

I saw the self check-in system everywhere in America but my boyfriend likes to talk to people so we never used them lol
I feel like the self check-in system has been spreading to local shops even in my area (not Tokyo).

You heard about Amazon's combini in Seattle? No check out. Go in, get what you want and walk out. It is all tracked and billed to your account. That is where we are headed.

yes, I heard about that. That's crazy!
When I went to Chicago, I happened to go to a restaurant with no staff (a person appeared later but she was just there). We ordered with a machine paid with a card and the food was delivered in a dedicated box. I should make a post about it but it was a crazy experience.

Looks lovely man,
You guys have really beautiful places in Japan... I will go visit once I have a bit more financial freedom to do so.
Cheers

Man, the city is so amazing. The design and thought that goes into the smallest detail in Tokyo is mind blowing.

Indeed, get some $$ and time and come for a visit. Steemit fam is growing in Japan and will open our arms to ya, in a plutonic way of course.

As long as I dont have to crash in one of those capsule hotels :P

Saw this featured on @jrvacation (๑•‿•๑). I'll put this on my list of places to visit if I'm in the area. I'm surprised self-checkout is a recent thing in Japan! Then again, some offices there still use the old school fax machines (๑˃‿˂).
