Top 3 Oddly Memorable Dates (Notes from Under the Tatami Mats–33 … My Adventures in Japan)

While we were dining, she interrupted the conversation to ask me, “By the way, what’s your name?”

S-chan – “I’m inviting you out for dinner. Your treat.”

After I had lived in Sendai for several years, I returned to Sapporo for a visit. When I contacted my friend S-chan, she invited me out for dinner. I agreed, so we met and she escorted me to a decent little Italian restaurant that she frequented.

We ate several fine dishes and had some good wine, and most likely had some tiramisu for dessert. When dinner was done, and we made our way to the cash register, the only cash that made its way to the register was mine.

Then, about a year later, S-chan was living in Tokyo. When I went down there from Sendai to catch the gig of a few Sendai friends, I got in touch with S-chan again.

Before we went to the concert hall, she escorted me to a fine cafe, where we dined on ¥500 cakes and ¥600 coffees, and then to a restaurant where we ate something which probably cost more than it was worth. And again, the only cash which floated out of any wallet was that belonging to yours truly.    _{(Image source)}

Not that it matters. It was just weird, and oddly memorable.

K-chan ­– “I know you. We’ve never met.”

K-chan worked at a Tokyo-based bridal company for which I conducted wedding ceremonies in recently constructed “chapels”  throughout the Tohoku region. For over 2 years, we arranged my schedule by talking on the phone 8–10 times per month, sometimes more often.

She had a gentle, almost sultry voice, which became friendlier and warmer and more alluring over time, and which made her seem quite attractive.

Eventually, I had an excuse to go to Tokyo, so I arranged to meet her, and to get a glimpse of her (among other things). She turned out to be not quite as voluptuous as I had expected, but she nevertheless turned out to be quite good-looking, not to mention very pleasant, interesting, charming, and of impeccable character.   _{(Image source)}

R-chan – “Thanks for lunch. Who are you?”

R-chan was a healthy-looking, well-endowed aerobics instructor at the local sports club.

Since I had joined her class several times, I knew her name. But apparently I had never introduced myself to her.

After we chatted at the club a few times, I invited her out for lunch, so, a few days later, we met at an Indian curry restaurant downtown. We sat down, ordered, and started eating.   

Then, while we were dining, she interrupted the conversation to ask me, “By the way, what’s your name?”     _{(Image source)}
