Netanyahu Investigated for Media Corruption, Israel Police Recommend Trial

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is facing heat for media corruption with Israeli media. Israel police have investigated Netenyahu being provided favorable media coverage. They have recommendations for the Public Prosecutor’s Office to go to trial for corruption charges, for a third time.

The current investigation is called Case 4000, or the Bezeq case. The two previous recommendation to prosecute Netanyahu for corruption were Case 1000 and Case 2000. Neetanyahu's wife, Sara Netanyahu, will also being investigated next month for her involvement in Case 4000. But Netanyahu isn't worried, saying the case will be closed without an indictment against him.

Case 4000, or the Bezeq case, is about Shaul Elovitch, the owner of the Israeli media giant Bezeq Telecommunications providing favorable media coverage of Netanyahu. He told police he intervened int he media coverage for Netanyahu and provided slant coverge because he "didn’t want to annoy the PM." In return, the police think Netanyahu "advanced regulatory decisions benefiting Elovitch".

Elovitch said:

"I could not ignore the requests of Sara [Netanyahu’s wife] and the rest of the family. I did not want to annoy the prime minister. He’s my regulator."

"What did you expect? That I’d ignore these requests? But I never expected anything in return. I didn’t speak with Netanyahu about regulatory benefits or about any bribery deal."

The investigation sees a link between favors and Bezeq "earned hundreds of millions of dollars during Netanyahu's term as Communications Minister."

There is also a fourth case, Case 3000, where police are investigating a $2 billion submarine deal. Netanyahu's lawyer is said to have been paid $9 million to ensure the deal went through. Netanyahu is apparently not being investigated in this case.

Sara Netanyahu has seen a charge laid on her this past June, for "fraud and breach of trust". This hs to do with an investigation of her forging family expenses. The allegations are that she misused state funds to order catered meals at the Netanyahu home. The total is around $100,000 in meals. She could face up to 5 years in prison if convicted.
