I'm Spencer. Here's an introduction about myself and how I found what I was meant to do.
Hey guys! I'm Spencer Curtis.
I'm stoked/grateful to be a part of the Steemit community, and have found it in its early stages. I wanted to introduce myself, so I can get myself out there, and connect with some (or all) of you!
I'm an iOS Developer.
About two years ago, I began attending college studying to get my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, and become a graphic designer. Life however took me down a different path after one semester there. Instead, I ended up hearing about a coding bootcamp called DevMountain. I took their iOS course and learned how to write apps in Swift and Objective-C, and get the foundational knowledge required to work in the industry.
This to me is amazing because after I quit college, but before I decided to try iOS development, I felt like I had betrayed my ideals and my ideal self. Sure, I ended up going down a different path than I has originally intended. However, with this change, I realized that it wasn’t specifically making art that I derived fulfillment from. Instead, coding helped me realize that I just love creating things. It also made me realize I’m not really meant to be an artist in the traditional sense of the word (i.e. I realized I kind of suck at what I was going to college for). I'm by no means a professional at iOS development, but I love learning new things every day.
I guess the lesson that I learned from these last few years is that things don't always end up how you plan, but it's important to keep yourself open to new opportunities. For example, I've always loved Apple and their products, however I never had considered learning to code. I honestly don't know what I'd be doing right now as a college dropout if I hadn't been open to at least trying something different. Flexibility in life goes a long way in my opinion.
Fast forward to today:
I now work at DevMountain (and have been for a little over a year), I get to teach people how to code, and I absolutely love every day of it. It’s super fulfilling to me because I love teaching people the same course I went through a year and a half ago, see them learn to love to code, make awesome things (students make two completely original apps of their own and put them on the iOS App Store before they graduate), make a career out of it, and most importantly; it's a career that is actually enjoyable to them.
I think the potential for Steemit as a social media platform is huge.
Like I already said, I’m really excited to join Steemit. I think I will write an article on how I think Steemit can become a truly awesome social network. The cool part is as of now, it’s fairly new, and growing, so there is a huge opportunity to shape it into something unique.
So guys, that’s a little bit about me.
I’d love to talk to you all and get some tips/pointers on how you make the most out of Steemit, as I’m new to it. However, if someone wants me to talk about something related iOS development, or DevMountain, or anything in general, I’d be happy to. Also, hit me up if you have any questions. I’m not really sure what I’ll be posting on here in general, but I'll just figure it out as I go! Thanks for taking the time to read my introduction!
Warning: Semi-shameless plug incoming:
I'm also really excited to be finishing an app I've been developing for a few months called Ramps. I'll be sure to do a post about it when it's officially on the app store. It's a companion for making color palettes and color ramps when using drawing/graphic design apps on iPads like Procreate, Pixure, etc. so stay tuned for that if you're interested!
Thanks!
