Hi Steemians! This is me: Finally Free

Hello Steemit community!

My name is Damaris Rivera

At 33 I finally feel like I have a solid grip on who I am and what I want from this life. From growing up in a strict, religious household to now being married to another woman who I adore @betterbeing, for most of my life I have wrestled with who I am and who I was told I needed to be. In recent years, I have finally felt free to be myself and in spite of much heartbreak and great loss I remain steadfast in my love for life and living. Although I have been through many dark, desperate and lonely times, I remain a positive person and believe in the power of love more than ever.

Some of my passions are being active, exploring, traveling, adventuring and anything that involves a pool or a beach. I adore puppies and babies and am known by many as the baby whisperer. My relentless, never give up attitude keeps me motivated in times of struggle and my highly competitive nature means I never back down from a challenge. With renewed purpose and confidence I am pursuing some big dreams and goals and trusting my even bigger heart to lead me there.

Coming from a large family of 5 kids who were homeschooled all the way through high school, family is very important to me. Having very little influence from the outside world we were able to develop our own mini culture amongst ourselves and this has shaped a lot of who I am and how I view the world. In recent years I have moved away from my religious upbringing and no longer identify with any religion. Most of my family, however, remain unmovable in their beliefs. Because of their strict views, the majority of my immediate family, aside from my brother @theferalone, strongly disagree with the life I have chosen to live. This has been a painful reality as my family’s approval and acceptance has always meant a lot to me.

Through the many crashes and spikes of life, my highly logical, detail oriented, and analytical mind has helped me stay grounded and allowed me to remain consistent during the lowest of times. I am a fast learner and generally think of myself as a sharp person (which took me forever to even admit). These qualities coupled with my distaste for failure and my relentless grit, have allowed me to succeed at most things I put my mind to.

But no one is without their flaws, scars, and crosses to bear. I struggle with anxiety and insecurities. Although my struggle with anxiety is minimal compared to others, I know what it’s like to always have to battle negative thoughts and to get fixated on them to the point of panic. Although there are times when I feel I can’t keep my emotions from spiraling out of control, my investigatory nature demands that I understand this struggle so I continually introspect to discover what my negative emotional triggers are and develop tools to control and redirect them in a healthy way. There is a long journey ahead, but I know that progress is being made and this is what fuels me to push to become a more balanced, healthy, holistic, and dynamic person.

I’m excited to join my fellow steemians in this growing community where I hope to contribute in a genuine and meaningful way. I look forward to posting about mental, emotional, physical, and relational struggles and progress, as well as sharing my journey to becoming a lesbian and my exodus from religion. Life is a complex, ever-changing experience that’s better discovered together. Let’s make the most of this opportunity to have our voices heard and rewarded as we engage with one another on Steemit.

Hey welcome to Steemit.

Was their positives to being homeschooled? As in, benefits you have today that maybe you wouldn't have if you went to a traditional school?

There were many great things about being homeschooled. One of them being the individual attention and tailored education I was able to receive based on my learning style. I am very grateful that my parents chose to educate us this way and have never wished I had gone to a public or even private school. Another benefit was the close relationships I was able to build with my mother and siblings as they were the ones I spent most of my time with. There were times that I felt undereducated and like I was behind in some areas but after graduating college with a 3.98 GPA, it became clear to me that the unorthodox and at times lax education I received at home gave me all the tools I needed to succeed in the academic world. There were also some negative aspects of being homeschooled such as the lack of social interaction outside of my home that resulted in me struggling with social anxieties and deficiencies but all in all I believe I am a better person for it. I plan on expanding more on my homeschooling experience in future posts. Thank you for your question!

Welcome to our community, Damaris! Have a nice time here. I am looking forward to reading your next posts :)

Thank you! I look forward to sharing!

Welcome to an awesome community! Y'all are a beautiful couple, and are more than welcome 'round these parts, lol. Being from the South, I understand the narrow minded, religiously fueled, view points and lifestyles. Almost like evolving your existence, or with your society, is sinful in their eyes. I don't think being holy, means living in the far distant past. Just one man's humble opinion. Anyways, glad y'all are here, I'm going to bounce over to your wife & brother's pages, too. See what everyone is about :) Cheers!

Thank you for the warm welcome! Being from NYC and now living in TN it’s crazy to see the difference in political and social views. It’s sooo much more conservative and less progressive here. Being a gay, biracial couple here is definitely hard at times in the Bible Belt. Whereabouts in the south are you from?

Oh yeah (I mean no offense here), y'all are like a unicorn down here. I'm do South, on the Alabama coast. I have nothing but respect for what you probably have to deal with. Don't think twice about kickin' an ignorant redneck in the family jewels, if need be, lol. I also hope people wisen up to the notion that it ain't their business. Congratulations on, what I would imagine was, an amazing wedding.

Haha, thanks! Yeah, I can feel the glares when we are acting like a couple in public. I can tell a lot of people are still completely uncomfortable with it. Also, the fact that we are biracial makes us stick out even more. But I won’t let other people’s homophobia or judgement keep me from being me and proud. I will be posting more about our wedding soon so look out for that 😊

Cool! And I bet, but I think it's beautiful. Like a yin-yang :)

Thanks! She definitely is the yin to my yang in so many ways 😊 Are you on discord? You can find there as introspector7913.

Of course! What servers do y'all kick it in regularly? My username is the same.

So I’m so new to this that I’m only in like 1 server. I’m trying to figure out how to get connected to more. If you know of any you think would be good to check out let me know!

Awesome introduction post and of course welcome to the Steemit community. You'll find a great and supportive enviroment on this platform and any questions or advice you have starting out you can feel free to ask. A precautionary measure I try to get every new user to undertake is to make sure that you only log into Steemit on your posting key as this keeps your account secure. Always make sure to have copies of all your keys stored securely off line as well. You will find this function in the permissions section of your wallet. Again, that was a beautiful introduction and of course looking forward to your great content. Many blessings and Steem on.

Thanks for the encouragement and tips! Really appreciate it. Hope to start posting some new content soon!

It's been such a gift to watch you rise into your true self. Your spirit, courage and ability to love others through terribly painful circumstances has been an inspiration to me. Welcome to the Steem community, it's that much better now that you've journeyed here ❤️
