🇱🇺 INTRODUCE YOUR HOMETOWN - LUXEMBOURG CITY, LUXEMBOURG 🇱🇺

in #introduceyourhometown7 years ago (edited)

Dear Steemians,

This to introduce my hometown Luxembourg City, which is the capital of, what else would you expect, Luxembourg 🇱🇺

Luxembourg, the country, is a landlocked country in western Europe, with borders to Germany, France and Belgium. Luxembourg is a tiny country with a total of 998.6 square miles (2586,4 km2 ) with some 580,000 inhabitants. Our currency is the Euro (€).

Most Luxembourgers speak Luxembourgish, German, French and English. We have as well a huge Portuguese community, so that you often hear Portuguese speaking as well.

Due to the small size of the country, a lot of workers and employees are cross-border-workers. As in the catering- and in the selling branch a huge number of them come from France and Belgium, it can be useful to speak some bribes of French to order your coffee on a shady terrace.

First thing you'll be aware a bit everywhere in Luxembourg are the witnesses of the past, for Luxembourg was a very strong fortress, that time also called Gibraltar of the north. The fortifications were only dismantled in 1867, but the remains can be seen everywhere. Click -> Wikipedia: Fortress of Luxembourg

Imagine the poor guys who had to attack through this bottleneck, being basted from two sides with all kind of projectiles as well as pitch and sulfur:

Nowadays, Luxembourg is a peaceful and calm little city with mostly friendly people.

One of the main tourist attractions is the Grand-Ducal Palace, with the build-on Chamber of Deputies. Napoleon once resided here.

And this place is called "Rives de Clausen" and it represents the remains of a former leading brewery in Luxembourg (yes we do also brew beer in Luxembourg). Nowadays, also if it doesn't look like on my photos, it is one of the favorite Party-miles in Luxembourg. Unfortunately I have no nightlife pics of it, but you only need to google the three words and look at the images. It seems not to be the same place at night.

Hope you enjoyed my little guided tour through Luxembourg. This post was primarily about the historic side of Luxembourg City, next time, I'll take you uptown.

PP

i still need to go there someday ,but first i need to find a new house to life and move away from this place. although it's only a 3hrs drive from my place ..

That's true, it's close! Well, give me a word, should you visit some day! 😉

beautiful! thanks for sharing.

Thank you so very much! 😊

When we were children, at school, we studied Belgium, Nederland and Luxemburg, togerher and named in this order. And we knew Bruxelles, l'Aia and Luxemburg were the Capitals. That Amsterdam was built on the sea and that Nederlands was the Country of tulipans. Nothing else. And, quickly, a jump to Germany.
Thanks for your post!

Thank you so much for your kind comment!
So it's time to visit the three countries of your childhood one day!
I love it when you call The Hague "L'Aia". Surely your parents, at that time, said the French name: La Haye which is pronounced that way and must sound to childrens ears like L'Aia!

Oh, you already know how much I love your city - and the whole country! I look longingly at your beautiful pictures, wishing it was me strolling along the fortress ruins- beauty in distress can be amazing! You gave me a good fix! Every shot, I can look at and most recognize. Oh, the days of living within arms reach of your most beautiful city! Thank you for the wonderful show! I just love this most well-kept secret! PS... I used to fly into Luxembourg because it was always less expensive than the neighboring countries. I got an extra view at a discount! A very lovely piece, Patrick! I look forward to more!

Upvoted and Resteemed (because I must, I must!!)

Thank you so very much for everything, Denise, your kind words, the upvoting and resteeming! I always love to read your comments, so truly full of passion. And I love your sympathy for my little country and hope, you will visit it again soon - don't forget to give me a word than!
Did you see, that with this post, @pollux.one launched a contest to promote the #introduceyourhometown series (one day left only):

Luxembourg is beautiful place to visit! Thank you for sharing to us

Thank you Maya, dear! Have you ever been here?

Great introduction & photos my friend! Would love to visit it one day ;) Maybe do another one of some hidden gems and your most favorite places? ;) This was the purpose of my #introduceyourhometown when I started it... Posting things you can't read in books or on the internet ;)

We keep the hidden gems for ourselves, we Luxembourgers! 😃😉
Also, ich lass mir schon was einfallen, will ich doch schon länger über Luxemburg schreiben.
Danke aber für die coole Initiative, hab noch einen schönen Tag!
