Pilots and passengers on the right side of the plane may see two concrete rectangles on one of the margins of runway 10/28 at Savannah / Hilton Head International Airport. What you probably do not even imagine is that it is a pair of tombs and that if you look better you can see the tombstones of these.
One of them is that of Catherine Dotson, who died in 1877; the other is that of her husband Richard, who died in 1894.
When the airport was inaugurated in 1932 as the Savannah Municipal Airport was quite small, but during the Second World War the airport became one of the bases of the Army Air Corps so it became necessary to expand the runway.
The land for which it was extended was not only on the farm of the Dotson but the extension of the track passed over the family cemetery that had been opened with Catherine and Richard and that then included about a hundred graves.
The heirs of the Dotsons did not put any problem to the extension whenever the army paid for the transfer of the tombs to another place, although they did not want those of Catherine and Richard moved. So to avoid getting into possible trials the army reached an agreement with them to build the track above, thus leaving the tombs "embedded" on the track, an agreement that has remained in force since then.
Today the airport is again civil and apparently the only one in the world that can say that it has two tombs, which can be seen perfectly in Google Maps in one of its tracks.
What no longer appears in Google Maps are the ghosts of Catherine and Richard that, according to the legend, you can sometimes see at sunset if you land in the right direction and the Sun is in the correct position.
