The arctic circle is an imaginary line that delimits as far as the arctic reaches, the point at which it is not made at night in the summer solstice and is not made during the winter solstice.

And although the bulk of Iceland is not in the arctic circle, a tiny part of its territory is located above that parallel: the arctic circle crosses a few hundred square meters of the small island of Grímsey (population, ~ 85 people) ).

And that's where this huge 8-ton concrete orb called Orbis & Globus is located, designed by Studio Granda and local artist Kristinn E. Hrafnsson.

The idea was to indicate the exact point where the arctic circle begins (towards the north), above 66.5 ° north. The problem is that this theoretical point moves a little each year because of the displacement of the axis of rotation of the Earth, so that the installation had to be "mobile": every year you have to "push" the orb a dozen meters so that Your position is correct.

And so on until the orb falls into the sea. According to Iceland Review, the installation will be "useful" only for a few more years: "The arctic circle first entered Grímsey 300 years ago and will move towards the north of the island in 2050, not to return for another 20,000 years."
