Be The Hero Of Your Journey

in #inspiration7 years ago (edited)

Literally EVERY SINGLE big positive change that has transpired in my life came about at the LAST POSSIBLE MOMENT.

Can you relate?

It was during the times where I...

...had NO IDEA what to do next.

....was OVERWHELMED with fear.

.....felt COMPLETELY upset and frustrated.

......was bracing myself for the real threat of DOOM...

...when something miraculous happened.

At the last possible moment, something changed.

A door would open.

An opportunity would appear.

A genius idea would pop into my head.

A friend would reach out to help.

An important detail would be revealed...

Within a matter of a moments, I would go from ZERO to HERO...

And it wouldn't have happened if I had given up just moments before...

The Hero's Journey

Have you ever heard of the hero's journey?

It's literally the story structure that every major movie production follows.

There are 9 primary sequences and each pushes the story forward in some way:

Hero's Journey Story Structure

In a nutshell, every story following the Hero's Journey structure begins with a main character who is living in a "normal reality."

That reality quickly disappears as the character is forced to leave his/her old world in order to embark on a new adventure.

This leads to discovering a team, a mentor, and a variety of obstacles along the way.

Eventually, the main character reaches the final enemy or obstacle that he/she must confront alone without anyone's help.

It is during this time that the character is given the opportunity to discover his/her true power, which changes them forever...

You Are Living The Hero's Journey

I believe that this extremely popular story structure is that way because the human psyche can subconsciously relate.

I believe that the journey we witness in a movie, is very similar to that of our own.

We vicariously seek to be that man or woman who transcends their greatest obstacles, in order to discover their own true powers.

Whether or not you agree with that, what if it were true?

What if the stories we see in movies are the same stories we experience in our own lives?

The Dusk Before The Dawn

Earlier I stated that "Literally every single big positive change that has transpired in my life, came about at the last possible moment."

When I relate this statement back to the Hero's Journey, I see that it strongly relates to Sequence F (See Hero's Journey Chart Above).

In this sequence, the main character is losing BIG TIME.

The character's back is to the wall, his/her mentor and team is nowhere to be found, and all hope is lost.

And at the moment before the character dies or all is lost...

Something happens.

Sometimes the enemy exposes their weakness.

Sometimes the situation changes and a clear opportunity appears.

Sometimes the character discovers his/her true power.

Whatever it is... it's always a game changer.

And it's this game changer that changes the character's life FOREVER.

You Are The Main Character

In our lives, we will all eventually find ourselves in Sequence F.

It's during these times when all feels lost.

When darkness rules and we feel we have nothing left to give.

It's during these times when giving up or giving into our fears becomes highly seductive.

It's a time when we feel the LEAST empowered...

But here's the interesting thing:

The next sequence CHANGES EVERYTHING.

Suddenly out of nowhere, a light appears, and the tables turn.

From what seemed like complete devastation, came to be a true miracle.

That's what a story is anyways, isn't it?

Well... I'm here to say that your life is no different.

Yup - it's the same shit folks!

If you haven't found yourself there yet, you will find yourself there one day.

And it's when you're in the darkest of dark times when you will be tested...

You have two choices:

Choice #1: Give in to your fears and let them become your master or...

Choice #2: Hold strong with all of your might!

SPOILER ALERT: Choice #2 will ALWAYS lead you to a profound new life.

Choose To Be The Hero

Every great breakthrough comes just after the greatest resistance.

Nature demonstrates this to us every day of the year.

What is present just before dawn?

Darkness.

What creates the contrast to see the first twinkle of light?

Darkness

What serves as the canvas to paint beautiful, inspiring rays of shining bright light on the world?

Darkness!

If it weren't for this great contrast, we simply wouldn't experience beauty...

We wouldn't experience miracles...

And we wouldn't have a true story.

Choose To Be The Hero Of Your Life.

It will lead you to a world of infinite possibilities.

It will show you your true power.

It will change your life.

And it will help you to truly discover...

Who You Really Are.

Awesome post, thank you :)

Another cool on point post! Nothing much I can add really except my own thoughts which are kinda along similar lines, although obviously coming from a different angle. I posted this last week:

Ah! I love the way you worded that. Definitely is all about making space and filling in that void. Thanks for sharing!

Yes! Nice one! I know I'm living my own Hero's Journey. Perusing writing sites and boards, I see where people discuss whether or not a writer is more interesting when they've had to deal with that Darkness. Some sort of trauma, life or death, that can really set you apart. Is that needed? I personally think it adds to the writing. A layer of perception that makes you view the world as something special, sacred, and fleeting. Conflict/Adversity always leads to some sort of change. It's up to us whether or not that change builds our character, or tears it down.
