Inktober Day 14: Clock
Clockwork beetle
I actually went with my first idea for the word ‘clock’. I had planned on doing a beetle but was intimidated for some reason. Yesterday’s painting gave me encouragement so I jumped right into today’s drawing. In my head you’d press the stone in the middle of it’s head to open up the shell and click on the pin at the bottom to trigger the release of the wings. Then you’d turn the center horn clockwise to get the wings to move.
The progress...
I pulled a couple of reference photos of insects from the web. I did a really quick sketch using Procreate’s canvas symmetry guide, not caring too much for accurate proportions since I drew it to my liking.
Next up, inking! I could’ve done a separate draft layer but I felt relaxed and confident enough to make things up as I went. I did find myself stuck while drawing the clockwork but I got over it when I accepted that the little dials didn’t have to be prefect. It would’ve driven me crazy!
I made three layer copies of the inking and merged them together to make the line art bolder. Then I colored in the interior of the clockwork in a relaxed manner. Now the details stand out better. :)
I finished the image by putting a wash of color to the background so the beetle would pop!
THE ROBOKING BEE! :D :D:D
A VERY CREATIVE CONCEPT! <3
It’s very Steampunk-ey? I recently rewatched The Golden Compass on Netflix and there was a really cool mechanical insect which made me think of this. :)
cool! I think I need to take a look!
have you watched '' the most hated '' in black mirror series?
I hope I remember the title right!
those bees were just insane! I just got reminded of that! :O
Elegant design! Symmetry tools are really making things so much easier, but it still takes some style to do it in style. i like the little diamond Cyclop's eye.
Thank you! 😊 I’m really proud of this one! May turn it into a sticky or a pin to sell in the future.

I like this one very much. Would definitely looking cool as a tattoo motive🤙
Thanks @bronkong! I’d be so scared for someone to have on of my drawings on them for life! 😆
I would totally have a pocket watch like this.

Right!? I image the face of the clock to either be on top of the dials or maybe on the underbelly?

I love beetles and scarbs, both in real life as well in jewelry form, so it would be AMAZING to have an actual little pin clock like this you could wear on a chair or your label and you click it and it's wing's pop open to tell the time!
Great job!
They look so cool! I’ve been wanting to build a collection. Maybe have then put into a shadow box of some sort. If I was any good at animation then I’d make one of this opening up to tell the time. Future goals?
Oh yeah, this is awesome. What a wonderful little steampunk beetle this is :D.
Great design, foxxie! You should do more like this ^_^.
Thanks scrawly!! I definitely will make more. I was even thinking that this would be cool as an enamel pin. ^^
