Anyone who hasn't been hiding under a rock the past decades knows that the bad guys in Star Wars were simply called "The Empire". In the more recent Disney incarnation of this space saga they were re-branded to "The First Order", but much like everything else in the new trilogy, it's exactly the same; still unreasonably evil, still modeled on fascist Nazi imagery and still not a fantasy, but a reflection of our Earthly reality.

Yes, it's true: we still live in the empire on which the sun never sets; it's just been re-branded and relocated a few times, and most recently its headquarters moved from London to Washington. It's so easy to become overwhelmed by all the political and economical wheeling and dealing presented to us in the daily news, and lose sight of the grand narrative told by history. That grand narrative has never changed though; it's still predominantly white countries that wage wars, sometimes economically with sanctions and trade deals, sometimes covertly by CIA and MI6 operations to install authoritarians that give us cheap labor and cheap resources, and sometimes with military operations baring imaginative slogans like "shock and awe" or "operation enduring freedom", against the brown people who live in countries that hold the resources and labor the white man needs to expand his capitalist empire. Latin America, South East Asia and the Middle East have been suffering for decades under the expansionist drive of European and American capitalists, just like they have been for centuries before, when these capitalists were still branded Kings, Emperors and Feudal Lords.

Washington is the current capital of The Empire; it's so important for everyone to realize this, as it explains everything going on with U.S. foreign policy as well as U.S. internal politics. After the World Wars the relocation of The Empire's headquarters from London to Washington was complete; the role of Global Policeman rests on America's shoulders since 1945 (and maybe it'll be taken over by China in the not too distant future), with the blessing of all governments in the western hemisphere. Not only in America, but all over the world children are taught in school how the U.S. is the world's predominant force for justice, democracy and freedom, all movies depict an American military fighting for those noble principles all over the globe, simultaneously glorifying the "righteous violence" needed to liberate the peoples of the world. How I wish this empire was something from "a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away", but it's right here, right now...

No matter what propaganda emanates from the "shining city on the hill", we should all know better than to believe that propaganda. We know America's foreign wars are for the sole purpose of exporting a particularly unapologetic and harsh form of capitalism that serves the needs of the neoliberal plutocrats that are our Earthly incarnation of Emperor Sheev Palpatine of the Galactic Empire in Star Wars. To extend the analogy, it can be argued that the Jedi are represented on Earth by all leftist political parties, at home as well as abroad. If you live in a country that holds precious resources, or in a country that doesn't want to play by the rules set by the neoliberal modern-day royalty, chances are you'll sooner or later be visited by the Empire's Storm-troopers, and be grateful for it to boot. This scene from Avengers: Endgame comes to mind, when Thanos' herald Ebony Maw walks among the corpses of slain Asgardians and says: "Hear me, and rejoice! You have had the privilege... of being saved by the Great Titan. You may think this is suffering. No...it is salvation. The universal scales... tip toward balance because of your sacrifice. Smile- for even in death... you have become children of Thanos." Replace "the Great Titan" and "Thanos" with "The Empire", and fiction becomes reality once more...

Everything we see happening in modern history is a reflection of the politics and economics of The Empire, with a central ruler (whoever is the current American President) and "regional governors" in the form of many puppet-regimes all over the resource rich countries full of brown people; sorry to be so blunt about the racial aspect, but it has to be said nonetheless. Here's the Star Wars version, articulated by Grand Moff Tarkin:

Grand Moff Tarkin: The Imperial Senate will no longer be of any concern to us. I have just received word that the Emperor has dissolved the Council permanently. The last remnants of the Old Republic have been swept away.

General Tagge: That's impossible! How will the Emperor maintain control without the bureaucracy?

Grand Moff Tarkin: The regional governors now have direct control over their territories. Fear will keep the local systems in line. Fear of this battle station.

The names are different and we don't have that battle station... yet. But we want one, as you'll see in the video linked at the end of this post. Politics in Washington is for the greater good of the Empire's continued existence only, which explains why both political wings exhibit no difference whatsoever where foreign policy and economics are concerned. America's foreign wars are therefore supported by both parties, as well as the neoliberal economic policies on the domestic front. This is why Democratic speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi blatantly and unashamedly admits that she didn't want to impeach Bush for starting an illegal war in Iraq, based on lies that are still believed today by too many people, in the first linked video. I mean she says that she KNEW there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, she KNEW it was a heap of nonsense meant to brainwash the American people into supporting that illegal war. How is that not impeachable, how is that not the abuse of power on the largest scale imaginable? This is why progressives who want to upset military and economical foundations on which the empire is built are resisted by both parties. This is why even the domestic population's well-being is sacrificed on the altar of The Empire, and why voters have given up on democracy all over the western hemisphere, seeking refuge with authoritarian, populist, narcissistic, xenophobic ultra-nationalist leaders, moving us ever closer to the fascist dystopia represented by Star Wars' fictional empire...

The Empire on Earth is bipartisan, and so is the Space War that lays in our future if we don't soon join The Rebellion. Watch the below linked video to get a taste of how the Republicans will get funding for the United States Space Force (no kidding), the sixth branch of the world's largest military, with full cooperation of the Democrats. Whenever a politician proposes something that would really improve the lifes of ordinary people, we always hear this: "where's all the money coming from?" This question is NEVER asked when the Empire needs additional funding to expand its sphere of influence, even if it's into space. We, the people, are the administrators, technicians, janitors and kitchen personnel of The Empire, only our plight is much worse than the one in that far away galaxy: ours is real. Rather than wait for this centuries old construct of repression and manipulation to implode on us, it really is time for us to wake up and join the rebellion. May The Force Be With You!
