Perseverance Porn Again

No, this is not about how long I, or anyone else, lasts in bed, not an essay about how long sex should actually last, no tips on how to last even longer... sorry. Perseverance porn instead refers to an especially devious kind of news-reporting, mainly found in local news outlets; these are reports that are supposed to be heart warming, but unwittingly lay bare the dire conditions of late capitalism.

About four months ago I wrote a short post already on this topic with the imaginative title Perseverance Porn; you should revisit that post, if only to watch the video of a brilliant rant from Hollywood actor Denzel Washington against the fake media. "California boy, 7, starts recycling business, saves $10K for college" is a typical perseverance porn headline, with the attached story emphasizing how the disadvantaged can make something of themselves by not giving up, and of course the little boy's entrepreneurship is glorified, not in the last place as a confirmation that in capitalism everybody really has a chance to make it. The story doesn't try to answer the more basic and far more important question of why this little boy had to become a little self-made man to be able to go to college in the first place.

To make this really concrete, here's a snippet from an article pointed out to me by my friend Peter S (@pcsasd) on Trybe.one a couple of days ago, about how American style healthcare threatens to invade the United Kingdom:

And it’s not just a failure - it’s a nightmare, that leaves people terrorized, broken, hopeless, and bankrupt. Your money, or your life. And if you don’t have money - you just...die. Americans literally beg each other online for money to pay medical bills by the millions...

The new and improved way of begging for your life... I'm sure you've seen or heard of at least one of those perseverance porn stories about people who start a GoFundMe or some other crowd funding project to save a fellow citizen who can't afford the medical treatment they need; it's literally "your money or your life"... This type of reporting truly infuriates me as it excuses our collective failure to create a fair society in which everyone has a right to life and the pursuit of happiness; clearly those rights are reserved for those who can afford them, as is to be expected in an economic model that commodifies everything, including human life, nature, clean water and breathable air. Lucky for me I can keep this short: Cody from Some More News has me covered in the below linked video. Please watch it, because if you think the examples I've given so far are infuriating, you ain't seen nothing yet...
