Medicine for Less-What Big Pharma Won't Tell You: Part 2

in #informationwar6 years ago (edited)

Howdy, fellow Steemians!!

It's Monday again, and today I bring some good news!

Last week, I wrote a post concerning the high price of prescription medication. I presented some cost-saving alternatives for those of us Americans, without health insurance, who cannot afford to pay retail prices for medicine. You can read about that here.

So, after having found a couple of solutions, the only thing left to do was prove the claims made by the companies I wrote about.

The moment of truth

Fast forward 6 days, and it's time for me to pick-up a prescription refill. A refill that I know I can't afford. The retail price of a 30 day supply (that's 30 pills) is over $70 dollars!!

That's OVER two dollars, per pill!!! INSANITY! I purchased a week's worth of groceries, for a family of 4, for less than $70 dollars!

This is outrageous!

The pharmacy

Armed with the goodrx.com discount card I found on my kitchen counter, I headed to the local big box store, to pick up my refill.

The pharmacist rings up my order, and peers at me over her kitten-eye spectacles.

I can tell from the look on her face that she is shocked. Worried, even.

" Ma'am? Do you have insurance? A co-pay amount?"
"No", but I'm supposed to show you this...",

I reply, digging around inside my purse to retrieve the discount card. Um... It's here somewhere! Still digging. Dammit, where is that card?!!
Seems that in my hasty departure from The Asylum (home), I'd managed to leave the one thing this whole trip was banking on back at the house: The Card.
FFFFfffffuuu...what now?

Ok, think for a second, Jane. This is 2018. There's bound to be an app for this service.

Standing in front of the pharmacist I grab my phone, and...

...luckily I do find an app for this very company. Installed it right then and there, did a search for my medication I was to refill, and instantly sprang up an e-coupon for a deep discount.

The pharmacist scanned the coupon from my phone, and the total of my bill went from $71.31 to $13.46!!!

GoodRX actually worked as advertised! I must admit, I was shocked. I figured there would be more to it than that. It was hassle-free! That's practically unheard of in this day and age!

Conclusion

This service does work, and can save you quite a bit of money! I've been to the one pharmacy, and I have more medication to refill in the near future. For those other prescriptions, I'll visit different pharmacies, to validate their participation in this program. In the coming weeks, I'll explore rxoutreach.org to see if it's legit as well.
I hope this information is helpful!!

Aw, Sweet!!! Thank you @jonmagnusson!

Oh Jane - what a blessing.
And what a blessing you are to those who find themselves in similar situations.

There is an app - for Jane, too..

Thank you, Globo! I never would have found out about this program (and many others), if I weren't in the situation I'm in. So, this actually is a blessing to me too. I'm glad I found out about these programs, and I feel honored to be able to pass this information on to others. I hope people are able to use these "tricks of the trade" to their advantage as well.
There's a "Jane app"? Does it do dishes? GIGG. (If it gives a "hoot" once in awhile, that would be soooo funny..if my phone randomly "hooted", from time to time. :)

Why not add the tag #informationwar to your post?

I did. It's the first one. For some reason it's showing up as black, and not blue...

or, did you mean, add #informationwar to the body of the text directly?

You're good Jane... :) xx

This is amazing, I don’t taje medication but for my parents this is going to be awesome

I'm happy about that!! I hope it saves them some money. It's definately worth checking out.

That is great information Jane. I am so glad for you. At least one thing less to worry about! As I am also without a medical insurance, it is insanely expensive here. My parents pay for the both of them R2600 per month for their insurance. That is 43 percent of their pensions. I can't afford that I am reliable on the state for my treatment and medication. But sometimes when I saw a private doctor I need to get a script.
Thank you for sharing this valuable information.

43%!!! That's a fair chunk of money! Geez! I wish Good Rx was international.

Wow, @disarrangedjane, what a great find!

I can only imagine what it would be like to worry, without insurance about needed meds. So happy you found this!

As a guy who literally came back from the dead due to hospital mishaps in my surgery to recover from cancer, I know how expensive these pills can be! I never would've been able to take everything they prescribed to me if I hadn't had the insurance. I think about this, often, when I'm praying and being grateful for all that I have been able to survive.

I hope that this program is being offered in all the main pharmacies so people can get their meds and still afford to live!

I am so happy that you came back, Jakob!! And I'm glad you had insurance to cover your treatment!! I hope you are still doing well!!
There are several pharmacies I see listed on the website. Even some order-by-mail sites are listed too!

Thanks for the article @disarrangedjane. While I have heard of them, I had no idea the discounts could be so huge! Resteemed to share with others, and following. Nice to meet you!
