Information Finding Championship - Season 1 : Round 16 entry
This is my entry for the IFC Round 16 started by @apolymask. This round's topic is Occult/Hidden.
Knowledge of the Hidden
Ever since the dawn of Man, we have been searching for the knowledge that is hidden away from us in plain sight. Our curiosity has sent us down the paths of forbidden experiments in the attempt to extract this knowledge from the clutches of the natural world. Sometimes, the knowledge is held strongly and must be taken by force, and other times the knowledge comes by just watching and listening to the universe.
Impending Doom
Just like the fabled Sword of Damocles, the Earth faces a danger from the Occult in the heavens. In the past this sword has devastated the planet, changing the face of the evolution of life forever and laying the foundations for the Age of Mankind.
Our Saviours
In the past, we have had the mages and the alchemists that sought knowledge of the hidden and kept watch over us. Now, we have our modern saviours many of whom are working privately as citizens in their own time. However, there is an elite cabal that has penetrated the machinery of the government to work from within the centres of power.
The Great Evil
The Earth is overdue for a major asteroid impact. The last major impact caused an extinction event that wiped out the dinosaurs and paved the way for the dominance of mammalian life, which eventually led to the evolution of the modern humans. There are many objects that cross the path of the Earth's orbit, and some of them could be large enough to cause us serious harm.
The Spaceguard Survey is the overarching term used to describe the collection of efforts to discover and map the orbits of Near Earth Objects, with an emphasis on those that might be hazardous to our planet. Organisations that are part of this effort include the citizen science group, International Occultation Timing Association and Planetary Defense Coordination Office of NASA.
Occultation (getting to the point...)
The term "Occultation" refers to the event when one object is hidden by another object that passes between it and the observor. In the case of asteroids, the otherwise invisible asteroid occults the background of stars or perhaps the moon or other planets. Unless they otherwise reflect light, this is the only reliable way to discover asteroids against the dark backdrop of space.
Discovering the occultation takes immense patience and skill. The observer must be prepared to watch the same patch of sky hoping for lengths of time, hoping for the moment that the backdrop makes a minute change that suggests something occulted it.
So, when you think of the occult and occultations, think of the unsung heroes of the Skyguard Survey and give thanks that someone is prepared to do the hard work of protecting our planet from the danger from above!

very cool entry! I didn't know anything about the Skyguard Survey - but I'm glad they are there, working tirelessly to keep us informed about what's going on in the solar system/universe. I really hope there won't be another asteroid impact!

Also kinda neat the IOTA was created the year I was born, not that that means anything, just a neat little coincidence I thought!
I definitely need to learn more about this group but it is good to know there is a group out there trying to protect us from such dangerous possibilities! It's also cool to know just about anyone can join their group and help protect the planet if they have the skills and want to. :)

We encourage individuality and unique entries. The subject was "occult/hidden" and I think your entry certainly fits that description! I even learned a new occult word! So yeah.. You're doing good in my opinion! No worries. :)
Did I ever ask what area of science you studied? I think we had that discussion but you seem to know a bit about everything :D Of course, there is a lot of science in music as well but your entries in the IFC is showing me that there is a lot more to someone than you can ever hope to figure out :) Good work with the newbiegames entries as well, you have definitely been busy!

Anyway, I had studied Physics with an emphasis on Theoretical physics. My father was a mathematician, but I just like learning about things!
I don't know how some people manage to get involved in so many things (such as yourself), and if she enjoys writing there is a whole list of writing contests on @moneyinfant's blog that she might be interested in. I'd love to see her write more and she does it well as you say, and you two do a great job with the classical music Discord group! Did you get @tin-tin to play some of your games as well?
The passing away of Stephen Hawking was mourned by the world as he was not just a great physicist but a humanitarian as well... Richard Feynman was my favourite physicist of all time but I do have a very health dose of respect for practitioners of mathematics in general.

Yes, Stephan Hawking was an inspiration to many generations, but also to the general population as well. Likewise for Richard Feynmann. But there is a new generation of great communicators. Can't always rest with the past!

That was a lot of cool stuff. A lot of people looking up, not burying their heads in the sand. Occult, can be fun at times, and a real science. It is nice knowing there are other people that are looking to determine cause, not just looking to undermine.
Yes, looking up is what we did as kids. As adults we tend to forget to do it once in a while!

Uhm, I read a post a day or so ago abt an asteroid discovered that's as tall as the Empire state building which can hit Earth in 2035.

A friend was trying to explain this to me the other day, he wasn't really able to convey any information. By this I meant occultation. I have perfect understanding of it now.
