Axioms of morality remain the same regardless of when you started caring.

Conservatives have objected that much of the recent outrage about immigration is precisely that -- recent. And therefore, they say, it is not sincere. Few people cared so much during the Obama administration... so why should we take such people seriously today?

But this does not necessarily follow. It is entirely possible for ordinary citizens -- who have limited spans of time and attention -- to have thought little about the issue until recently, and to have come around to a sincere concern all the same.

And in any case, one does not judge matters of right and wrong based on which things certain not altogether attentive people believed several years ago. Right remains right, and wrong remains wrong, and we don't retrofit the two just because we find someone annoying on the internet.

If you're new to immigration policy: Do not be ashamed, and do not be cowed. It's actually okay for citizens not to be experts about everything. We who have paid attention to immigration for years are both welcoming and understanding. It's not an interest that we expect everyone always to share.

Great message, completely agree.

The problem with your statement comes when the only reason people are focussing on it is because of the MSmockingbirdM.
Most of these people are only caring because the tell-lie-vision told them a sad story.

There are dozens of GREATER problems involving children in the world. That should be having our full attention.

Catching people crossing the border illegally and keeping them in cages is just what you do if you have a border. One follows the other.
Now, one must ask, does keeping "families" together protect the children or expose them to more danger?

Remember, child traffickers look just like a family.

And to put things into perspective, in certain african nations, people smuggle gems. One way to smuggle them is to hollow out a baby, and then pack it full of wadding and gems. It will cry, like a colicky baby for several days before it dies. Then the gem smugglers will get a woman to carry the baby across the border.

This is really happening.
No tel-lie-vision focussing on this.
And, what do you think of keeping the child with the woman?
Do you think it is a good idea to torture the woman with the dying of the baby? Justice? Payback? Karma? Got to keep the family together.
